🐖 Meet Joe Wilson: precision pig farming pioneer 🐖 Joe Wilson, a feature farmer in our 'Time for Tech' whitepaper, is a third-generation pig farmer from North Yorkshire. Joe is leading the way in precision pig farming, managing a 750-sow breeding unit, and embracing technology to transform his business. As the first UK farmer to trial MSD Animal Health UK’s LeeO ear tagging system, Joe is tracking individual pigs from birth to slaughter. 🌱 A Journey in Animal Health and Sustainable Farming 🌱 For a while now, I've been championing the idea that there's a profound link between how we care for our farm animals and the overall health of our planet. This WOAH Report reinforces this narrative. [https://lnkd.in/g_ZpKy39] This isn't a new revelation, but it's one that I feel is crucial to keep talking about. "A simulation based on livestock data for cattle herds in the Sahel countries showed that a small improvement in animal health could reduce the average annual mortality rate for calves to 15% (instead of 20%) and for adult cattle to 5% (instead of 7%), resulting in a 23% increase in the number of animals reared. For the same amount of meat produced, this would also result in a 17% reduction in methane gas emissions from the herds studied [17]." It's not about grand gestures or revolutionary changes. It's about the small steps we take in improving animal welfare and how these steps can lead us towards more sustainable farming practices. It’s kind of amazing how focusing on the well-being of our animals might just be a key part of helping our environment. Innovating in this space isn't just a professional choice; it's a personal mission. By integrating cutting-edge solutions in the livestock industry, we're paving the way for more sustainable practices.
