After two weeks of talks, there was little to show from the UN Cop 16 Biodiversity Summit in Cali, Colombia. There were high hopes for locking in funding commitments to halt nature loss and species decline but agreement could not be reached. 👎 There was no progress on a proposal for wealthy nations to contribute to a global fund to restore nature for developing nations - nor a plan for how #biodiversity targets will be monitored. 👍 A bright spot, a compensation fund called the 'Cali Fund' was created. Pharma, agricultural and cosmetics companies will contribute to a global levy on products made with genetic data from nature. 50% of the fund will be allocated to Indigenous communities, who will also have a permanent role in biodiversity decision making. Amidst hopes and setbacks, COP16 (UN Biodiversity), a key summit for implementing the UN Global Biodiversity Framework to protect 30% of global land and sea by 2030, has concluded in Cali, Colombia. The establishment of a permanent body to represent Indigenous peoples in the Convention’s decision-making is a historic milestone, marking the first official recognition of their traditional knowledge and territorial rights. The Cali Fund will be established, requiring pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and biotechnology companies to share revenue from digital genetic sequences of plants and animals with developing countries, recognising the value of their biodiversity. However, significant economic differences on biodiversity financing between developed and developing countries remain unresolved. To counter biodiversity loss and achieve the 30% goal, national governments must commit to eliminating harmful subsidies, destructive agribusiness practices, promoting regenerative agriculture, monitoring mining impacts, and regulating tourism. COP17 in Yerevan, Armenia, will be the next test for states to resolve ongoing uncertainties on several fronts. More on the key achievements of #COP16 in Cali. Digital Sequence Information was an important win for the COP. #Biodiversity rich countries have long provided access to genetic information that results in profits for corporations but do not get the benefits associated with that information. COP16 adopted a decision to establish the "Cali Fund", where qualifying companies who make revenue out of the use of DSI, will be required to contribute to this fund which will be used to advance #conservation action including supporting the work of #Indigenous People & Local Communities. The establishment of the Cali Fund, compensating countries for the use of their genetic information, offers hope. It will be essential to ensure that proceeds benefit the IPs and LCs who steward global biodiversity. See the COP16 Outcomes here: https://lnkd.in/dDfFW9eU

In 2022, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) was passed in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Despite its historical significance, and being widely hailed as the "Paris Agreement for Biodiversity", it's not widely talked about. As Singapore gears up for CBD COP16 in Colombia later this year with the upcoming release of its National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plan (NBSAP), we examine what this could mean for Singapore's biodiversity policy moving forward. Join us at the Festival of Biodiversity, held at One Punggol this year! Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/gFr7fYRT __ This event is open to all ages, but note that policies will be the main focus of discussion. Hosted by the Singapore Youth Voices for Biodiversity (SYVB), Singapore Chapter of the Global Youth Biodiversity Network, the official youth constituency of the United Nations' Convention on Biological Diversity. #biodiversity #cbd #cop16 #kmgbf #gbf #environment #conservation #policy #nparksbuzz

We have arrived in Cali Colombia for #CBDCOP16 and I’m delighted to be releasing our report “Enabling business contributions to the Global Biodiversity Framework - a synthesis discussion paper for businesses and policymakers” recognising the critical role that businesses will play in meeting ALL of the GBF targets. This paper draws on the excellent inputs from two business round-tables that were attended by 20 of the world’s biggest global companies. So what does this paper contain? - An overview of why business engagement in the GBF (and national biodiversity strategy and action plans (NBSAPs)) is needed. - The key drivers for businesses to support attainment of the GBF goals and targets. - Why NBSAPs are challenging for businesses to engage with - What existing guidance is available to support the engagement of businesses in NBSAPs - A detailed mapping of the types of actions businesses can take to contribute to the GBF targets (target by target and sector by sector) drawing on all the excellent guidance produced by TNFD, WBCSD, Business for Nature and others. - An overview of the types of investment activities that businesses can take to contribute to the GBF (drawn from the excellent work of the IFC) target by target - Some thoughts on what is needed next to better connect business action with government action at the national level A huge thank you to all our reviewers and contributors!
