Today we are celebrating #WorldFisheriesDay! 🎣 Empowering fishing communities for marine conservation is a vital step in ensuring healthy oceans for future generations. BirdLife International's ‘Guardians of the Sea’ program in Cabo Verde is a wonderful example of this in action. With support from local NGOs, artisanal fishing communities are: 🐢 Reducing bycatch of threatened seabirds, marine turtles, and sharks 💰 Improving livelihoods while preserving healthy fish stocks 🏷️ Establishing a sustainable fisheries certification Learn more about this inspiring project 🔗 https://loom.ly/bDjczTY 📸 Credits: 1. 🌊 On this International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, we emphasize the critical need to protect our oceans and ensure sustainable fisheries. IUU fishing threatens marine biodiversity, food security, and the livelihoods of countless communities. By advocating for stronger policies, promoting transparency, and leveraging innovative technologies, we can combat these harmful practices. Together, we can make a difference and preserve our marine resources for future generations. #FightIUUFishing #SustainableFishing #OceanConservation #crsclass #marineengineering

Sweden, Finland, Estonia, and Latvia want to move cormorants to Annex II of the EU Birds Directive—basically, they want to kill birds for... eating fish. But human activities are the problem here, not birds. Instead of wasting resources on ineffective culls, we should focus on restoring coastal wetlands and marine ecosystems, reducing overfishing, and supporting sustainable fisheries that can coexist with wildlife. #RestoreNature #Agrifish #EUnaturepolitics

Overfishing is the most significant threat to marine life and people. While fishing itself isn't harmful, commercial fleets harvesting faster than fish can reproduce endangers ocean ecosystems and the billions who rely on seafood for protein. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing is particularly damaging, often violating national laws and protected areas. Effective fisheries management, which includes monitoring fish populations and reproduction rates, is essential but often lacking. Destructive practices like bottom trawling, where boats drag structures along the seabed, significantly harm marine life. Despite reductions in countries like the UK, Spain, and Japan, bottom trawling is increasing in China and India. Support sustainable practices and marine protection with our 'Filet-O-Pisces' mini-shoulder bag. A portion of proceeds goes to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to aid their marine conservation efforts. #EcoFriendly #MarineConservation #LuxuryLeather #SustainableFashion #OceanHealth #FashionWithPurpose #LuxuryFashion #SustainableLiving #Overfishing #EcoFriendly #MarineConservation #FashionForGood

🌊🌍 Celebrating World Fisheries Day - November 21st 🌍🌊 Today, we honor the vital role fisheries play in sustaining life on our planet. Fisheries are more than just a source of food; they are a cornerstone of livelihoods, cultures, and ecosystems worldwide. At Blue ocean care, we are dedicated to protecting and promoting sustainable fishing practices, especially in Somalia, where our coastal communities rely heavily on healthy marine ecosystems for their survival. As we face challenges such as climate change, overfishing, and illegal fishing, let’s commit to: ✅ Supporting small-scale fisheries. ✅ Ensuring fair and sustainable management of marine resources. ✅ Advocating for policies that protect our oceans and the people who depend on them. On this #WorldFisheriesDay, let’s unite to ensure a future where fisheries thrive and coastal communities prosper. Together, we can make a difference! #SustainableFisheries #BlueEconomy #OceanConservation #SomaliFisheries

🌊 Protecting the Future of Queensland’s Reef Line Fishery 🌊 Queensland's fishing operators, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, play a crucial role in protecting the reef line fishery’s health by implementing seasonal closures. These closures are strategically timed to coincide with peak spawning periods for coral trout and other key species, helping maintain robust fish populations. The closures, endorsed by the Wildlife Trade Operation (WTO) under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, are vital in sustaining fish stocks for future generations and supporting Queensland’s economy. These measures allow fish to spawn without interference, directly contributing to a sustainable biomass. Through responsible practices like these, our fishery remains globally recognized, with exports continuing to strengthen our industry. A huge thanks to all stakeholders—fishing operators, environmental groups, and policymakers—working together to ensure the ongoing resilience and success of Queensland’s reef line fishery. #SustainableFisheries #GreatBarrierReef #ReefClosure #BlueReef

40% of world catch wasn't meant to be caught. Most methods used by commercial fisheries are indiscriminate, catching and killing many unwanted animals along with the ones they are targeting, some of which are discarded back into the ocean. This unwanted catch is called bycatch, and includes sea birds, turtles, sharks, dolphins, whales, and many other threatened species. If you want to do something meaningful for the ocean, and are in a position to choose an alternative source of protein other than fish, why not switch out seafood for a month and help bring attention to some of the issues that our oceans are facing? *We support ‘Fish Free February’ as an important initiative for marine conservation while recognising that fishing is a vital source of nutrition and income for many communities. We advocate for sustainable, small-scale fishing methods with selective gear, ensuring a balance between protecting marine ecosystems and supporting livelihoods.* Find out more at https://lnkd.in/eKc-nxb or read more on our Wetnotes Blog > https://lnkd.in/gG7AXeiB 📷 Simon Hilbourne
