Nature.com publishes an inspirational article by Ewen Callaway, "Estonians gave their DNA to science — now they’re learning their genetic secrets", which delves into the groundbreaking Estonian Biobank project at the Institute of Genomics, University of Tartu. Covering one-fifth of the country's population, this initiative is among the largest efforts to return genetic health information to participants. The article highlights the project's success in fostering genetic literacy and empowering individuals with insights into their health risks, ancestry, and drug metabolism. This is crucial as it sets a precedent for similar biobanks worldwide, demonstrating the value of returning genetic data to contributors and advancing personalized medicine. It's inspiring to see how the knowledge gained from DNA analysis is shifting our focus from fixing existing health conditions to ensuring they do not occur in the first place, which is also the least intrusive, most sustainable, and cost-effective approach. A paper I wrote, with my supervisors Rafael de Andrade Moral and Ollie Mason, has been published in the Journal of Theoretical Biology. This work was funded by the Irish Research Council. In this article we propose a novel stochastic framework to model the dynamics of animal groups and an auxiliary population, which could, for example, model consumer-resource or host-parasitoid systems. We simulate and fit this model to Yellowstone wolf packs and their elk prey. We also derive an approximation to the group correlation structure which quantifies the net group interaction strength and interpret this in the context of predator-prey theory. https://lnkd.in/ewgzgYhg

اعلام موقعیت تحصیلی در مقطع پستداک در حیطه Cell and Molecular Biology, در Michigan State University, America An NSF-funded postdoctoral position and a graduate assistant position are available to improve our understanding on light signaling in the stramenopile alga Nannochloropsis. About 71% of the Earth surface is water, and aquatic environments are strongly enriched in blue light and deprived of red light. How photosynthetic organisms living in freshwater or marine environments harness light quality and quantity information is an open question. This project will involve the in vivo analysis of photoreceptor abundances, interactions and transcriptional activity, making use of the extensive molecular tool box developed by the Farre lab. This is a collaborative project with biophysicists and mathematical modelers and will provide broad exposure to different disciplines. Applicants interested in a dynamic, positive research experience are especially encouraged to apply.

On today's menu: Kefir from the Bronze Age Isn't it fascinating how modern methods of molecular biology shed light on our history? Where we came from, what we used to eat and how we co-evolved with our domesticated plants, animals and microbes: All of that and so much more we learn by reading in the book of basepairs. 🧬📖 Highlights of a new study in the journal Cell: 🥛 3500 BP Lactobacillus genomes shed light on the origin of kefir in inland East Asia 🦠🤝🍄 Bacterial-fungal dynamics reinforce resistance to exogenous microbes in ancient dairy 🦠🤝🕺 Human-microbial interactions contribute to the adaptation of domesticated lactobacilli 🐐 🧬 Goat DNA from dairy suggests communication between Xiaohe and the steppe populations Really worth a read! Enjoy your weekend ☕️ Link to the study: https://lnkd.in/eDb2gcKD

Groundbreaking Discovery: Parasitic Wasp Straight Out of Sci-Fi! Scientists in Mississippi have identified a newly discovered parasitoid wasp, Syntretus perlmani, that behaves in a way we’ve only seen in movies. The wasp lays its eggs inside living adult fruit flies—a rare behavior—where the larvae grow for 18 days before dramatically emerging from the host’s abdomen, leaving the fly alive for several hours. This fascinating discovery opens up new insights into parasitic behavior, pushing the boundaries of what we understand about ecosystems. It’s a reminder that curiosity and persistence in research can lead to groundbreaking results that reshape our understanding of the world.
