A team at Macquarie University has developed a unique method for analysing sugars in cells to provide valuable insights for synthetic biology. Distinguished Professor Nicki Packer and team work with glycobiology, a field which explores the sugars attached to proteins, fats and other molecules. These sugars, called glycans, are essential for various biological functions but are not easy to predict because they are produced by numerous enzymes encoded in an organism's DNA. 🧬 Learn more about their research here ⬇️ #CoESB #OurPeople #SyntheticBiology #Glycobiology Australian Research Council

🧬🖥🌱 Center of Plant Systems Biology and Biotechnology - CPSBB organized and hosted a training on bioinformatics and its application in agriculture and farming to representatives of public organizations, small and medium enterprises. The event was organized within the #AgroDigiRise project with the main goal to optimize the current level of digitization in the organizations and help them develop agility to market changes and emerging technology trends. The training was led by Eng. Dimitar Kirkovski, Head of the IT Department at CPSBB and a PhD candidate in Molecular Biology. 🧬🧪🖥 The bioinformatics research was presented in three modules, presenting the importance of basic elements in DNA structure, which are fundamental for sequencing technologies. Another highlight was the quantitative and functional study of the change of expressed DNA information in the cell caused by environmental factors or other external influences. 🌱🧬🌱 The classic DNA reading technology (Sanger method) and modern techniques for massive parallel sequencing - NGS (New Generation Sequencing)- widely applied in medicine, biotechnology, agriculture, etc. were also presented. Eng. Kirkovski introduced the participants to effective methodology for classifying and storing results from bioinformatic analyses and ensuring efficient data access by researchers and scientific organizations. Dr. Emil Vatov, Molecular Biologist at CPSBB, joined the lecture and briefly presented the development and application of epigenetic research. #cpsbb #AgroHubBG #training #bioinformatics #BioinformaticsTraining #DNA #agriculture #competence #digitization #digitizationservices #smartagriculture

𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝘀. 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆: 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗯𝗼𝘅 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 Genetic engineering and synthetic biology are often mentioned together, but there’s a unique distinction and an exciting connection between the two. In genetic engineering, scientists alter an organism’s DNA by adding, removing, or adjusting specific genes to achieve desired traits, like crops with improved resistance to pests or bacteria that can produce insulin. Think of it as modifying the existing biological "blueprints" within an organism. Synthetic biology, on the other hand, uses genetic engineering as just one tool among many. It’s a broader, multidisciplinary field, where researchers approach biology like engineers designing, building, and even programming entirely new biological systems. Instead of just editing, synthetic biology envisions altogether new applications by combining insights from fields like computer science, engineering, and molecular biology. This convergence allows synthetic biologists to create custom biological circuits that can perform functions not found in nature, from sustainable biofuels to pollutant-detecting biosensors. In short, genetic engineering is an essential tool in synthetic biology's toolbox, but synthetic biology itself is a collaborative field at the intersection of many scientific disciplines a vision as much as it is a practice, with the potential to redefine our approach to some of the world’s biggest challenges. Share this post with someone curious about the biotech revolution and let’s discuss how synthetic biology could shape our future! #SyntheticBiology #GeneticEngineering #BiotechRevolution #Innovation #Biotechnology #synbio #IGEM
