I was excited to discover an online course starting TODAY on genomic variant interpretation, an area that aligns with my expertise and passions. This course is being offered by Wellcome Connecting Science Learning and Training, and I am grateful to them for the opportunity to expand my knowledge and skills in this area. Throughout my career, I have consistently engaged in researching and interpreting genetic variants. This emerging focus area not only matches my interests but also leverages my genetics/genomics and literature reviewing expertise and overall analytical and detail-oriented nature. I am eager to apply this knowledge in a new role and contribute to advancements in genetic research and personalized medicine. 🌟 I’m excited to share that I recently had the opportunity to present my poster titled "Bioinformatic Analysis of Oligopeptidase B from Trypanosoma brucei" at the University of Nottingham. This research dives into the fight against Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), also known as sleeping sickness, which continues to pose a significant health threat in sub-Saharan Africa. 🔬 Using advanced bioinformatic techniques, including homology modeling and AI-based structural prediction with AlphaFold3, I developed a high-precision 3D model of Oligopeptidase B (OPB), a crucial enzyme for the survival of Trypanosoma brucei. Through molecular docking studies, I identified several small-molecule inhibitors that have strong potential to disrupt the function of OPB, opening new avenues for targeted drug discovery against this parasitic disease. 💡 These findings represent a significant step toward developing safer and more effective treatments for HAT, offering hope for future therapeutic interventions. The insights gained from this study could be instrumental in advancing drug discovery efforts to combat this devastating disease. 🙏 A special thank you to my supervisor, Dr. Ivan Campeotto, for his guidance, mentorship, and unwavering support throughout this project. Today we celebrate national #DNADAY On April 25, 1953, molecular biologist James Dewey Watson’s academic paper presenting DNA’s double-helix structure (which he co-authored with British molecular biologists Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins) was published. #RosalindFranklin was overlooked in this discovery of DNA structure faced #discrimination and did not receive due credit while her male colleagues did. On April 14, 2003, the Human Genome Project, an international scientific research project with the goal of determining the base pairs that make up human DNA and identifying all genes of the human genome, was declared complete. Following the completion of the Human Genome Project, both the Senate and the House of Representatives proclaimed April 25, 2003 DNA Day and April as Human Genome Month.
