I’ve been a big fan of the convenience offered by #Zepto, #Blinkit, and #Swiggy Instamart. The promise of quick deliveries has made life so much easier, and I truly appreciate the effort that goes into making this happen. However, one thing I’ve noticed is the sheer number of paper bags being used, which is creating unnecessary waste. While paper is better than plastic, reducing waste altogether is the ultimate goal. Here are a few suggestions that could make a real difference: 1. Many delivery partners I’ve interacted with aren’t aware of any return bag policies. A quick training session could empower them to guide customers on how to return or reuse bags. 2. Customers who choose to opt out of receiving bags could be rewarded with a small incentive, like a ₹2-3 discount. It’s a simple way to encourage sustainable choices. 3. Adding a friendly pop-up in the app to remind users to be mindful about opting out of bags could go a long way in creating awareness. 4. It would be great to see sustainability as a part of upcoming campaigns. Highlighting the steps being taken to reduce environmental impact could inspire more people to join the movement. I’m excited about the potential for change and know that with a few thoughtful tweaks, these platforms can set a gold standard for sustainability in the delivery space. While on vacation on the Atlantic coast of France last week (it was just incredible!), I actively explored supermarkets there. I was curious about the #refill stations for dry food when I saw them. Although they seem well-made (it’s an investment!), the area around them was empty. I’ve seen nobody approaching them to use. Why is that? The #refill concept is great. As consumers, we need to bring our own #reusable containers or bags to fill and take home. It’s the best we can imagine in fighting the increasing packaging waste problem (apart from eliminating packaging or its layers whenever it's feasible). No extra natural resources are used, no waste is generated, and no CO2 is emitted from single use packaging. I think this shows that consumer convenience can make or break the best packaging concept or model. Indeed, from a convenience standpoint, it’s challenging to bring your own containers. If one or two are manageable, bringing more raises questions. In the supermarket next to the filling station, there were plastic bags, claimed to be compostable, for users who do not have their own containers, i.e., for everyone in this case. However, this goes against the refill benefit of eliminating single-use packaging. Maybe it’s just a question of convenient container management? For example, allowing local shoppers to borrow standard, lightweight containers and then incentivizing them to return and rotate them could be a solution? What do you think could make it work?
