There are over 200 symptoms to celiac disease that vary from digestive issues and brittle finger nails to depression that affect your quality of life. In their new blog, the Gluten-Free Food Program (GFFP) explores why, if you have some of these symptoms, it's time to get tested for #celiacdisease.
In our NEW BLOG, Why Celiac Testing is Crucial for Those Suspecting Celiac Disease, we explore why celiac testing is so important for those who suspect they might have the condition. Early detection significantly improves your quality of life and prevents long-term health complications. Symptoms vary but often include digestive problems, such as bloating, diarrhea, and gas. Other signs are fatigue, anemia, and even depression. The Importance of Early Diagnosis Early diagnosis through celiac testing can prevent serious complications. Untreated celiac disease leads to osteoporosis, infertility, neurological issues, and an increased risk of certain cancers. Celiac Testing: What Does It Involve? Celiac testing typically begins with a blood test to detect specific antibodies. If results are positive, a biopsy of the small intestine may follow to confirm the diagnosis. Testing should be done while you are still consuming gluten for accurate results. The Risks of Self-Diagnosis Many people try a gluten-free diet without testing, believing it might solve their symptoms. However, self-diagnosis can be risky. It may lead to a false sense of security or miss a more severe condition. The Role of Family History If you have a family history of celiac disease, testing is even more critical. First-degree relatives of celiac patients have a higher risk, making early testing essential. Avoiding Long-Term Complications Celiac disease is not a condition to ignore. Without testing and proper treatment, the long-term complications can be severe. Besides gastrointestinal issues, untreated celiac disease can cause other systemic problems. Support and Resources After Diagnosis If you test positive, the National Celiac Association is here to help you navigate next steps. https://ow.ly/A0B250SPqw5 #glutenfreefinder #guthealth #gutissues #itcouldbeceliac #diagnosisceliac #celiacdiagnosis #depression #fatigue #bloating #gas #bowelissues #bowelproblems #weightloss #celiacsymptoms #celiactesting #celiacdiseasetesting

In a worlds first, doctors successfully performed the first transplant of a genetically modified pig kidney into a living human, giving hope to those in need of #organtransplants The recipient has been in the transplant program for 11 years. Previously received a kidney in 2018. Resumed dialysis with end-stage kidney disease in 2023. What was required to get here? 1. #CRISPR - 69 precise edits to the pig’s DNA to deactivate pig retroviruses that can reawaken and infect humans. 2. #Monoclonal antibodies - specifically tailored to prevent the rejection of pig organs. 3. Tests and protocols - assured safety and saved a life. #medtech #healthcareinnovation

Happy Lupus Awareness Month! I would like to extend my gratitude for the remarkable benefits provided by specific nuclear medicine exams in the context of lupus. These exams, such as SPECT, PET, and technetium-99m bone scans, have revolutionized the diagnosis and management of lupus. They have allowed for accurate identification of organ inflammation and damage, assessment of disease activity, and evaluation of organ involvement. These invaluable tools have not only improved patient care but also enhanced our understanding of lupus pathophysiology. The insights gained from these exams contribute significantly to the development of targeted therapies and further research in the field of lupus.

Major medical milestone today: The first pig kidney was transplanted into a living human. The 62-year old man, who has end-stage kidney disease, received a pig kidney developed by eGenesis, which used 69 different gene edits to make these organs viable in humans. Seems like we are finally seeing some forward movement in the field of xenotransplantation-- and that really could be critical to closing the yawning gap between need and supply of organs. Re-upping my recent Bloomberg Opinion column about proof-of-concept studies in monkeys (spoiler: they survived for many months), why we use pigs, and what the next steps should be.
