The current state of affairs highlights just how unusual our times have become, especially when we see both private and public sectors wasting so much time and resources on discussions about how to handle the issue of bikes being dumped all over pedestrian space. After months of deliberation in Brent, the proposed 'solution' has turned out to be the introduction of designated parking bays and 'slow zones.' How did they come up with these ideas I wonder? I can't see these measures being enforced and given how we've seen riders use the bikes so far, it's unlikely they'll suddenly see the light and adhere to new rules. Throughout these extensive discussions aimed at addressing the chaos, speed, and clutter caused by these bikes, a crucial point has been largely overlooked: we already have a well-functioning system of rental bikes with designated bays. There was, and is, no need for these bikes at all. The 'benefits' they deliver are only serving lazy people that neither think of others nor care to pedal. This situation exemplifies the genius of modern start-ups, which reinvent the wheel — no pun intended — by presenting existing concepts as new, albeit under the guise of sustainability and convenience. I wonder when, if ever, we will return to efficiently resolving straightforward issues like this, freeing up valuable time and resources to be allocated to actual pressing challenges within our urban environments.

Banning a (sustainable) mode of transport for some user's poor parking and isolated bad driver behaviour, my WORD, well if that's all it takes let's just ban DRIVING as well then shall we?!?! No, we don't do that, like driving and vehicles, we need to make sure the actions of a few don't sully the experience for all. "Parking bays, and resources to remove incorrectly parked or abandoned bikes (vehicles)" are all very normal solutions to manage unsustainable transport, so let's try a little harder with sustainable modes, hey? https://lnkd.in/e4NadpzG Lime

The real #carparking problem is unrealistic expectations. A customer wanting free pizza and beer in every store they go to is unrealistic, unhealthy and unsustainable. And yet that unreasonable demand might be cheaper than providing free car parking! Where has this perceived right come from? It's become normal over decades, because it has been encouraged and satisfied. Conventional government strategies and regulations require minimum car parking to be provided on-site. This is changing, but most policy changes are not being accompanied by corresponding changes in public communications. Todd Litman compares the ‘old’ and ‘new’ parking paradigms in his Parking Management: Comprehensive Implementation Guide: https://lnkd.in/g4ng8Jka “The old paradigm assumes that transportation means driving, that parking lots should almost never fill, that parking costs should be borne indirectly by governments and businesses, and that every destination should satisfy its own parking needs. It assumes that the planning goal is to maximize parking supply and minimize prices." "The new paradigm strives to provide optimal parking supply and price. It assumes that transportation can include multiple modes and not everybody drives. It considers too much supply as harmful as too little, and prices that are too low as harmful as those that are too high. The new paradigm strives to use parking facilities efficiently ... It favors charging parking facility costs directly to users and providing financial rewards to people who reduce their parking demand”. Trucker's Dream: Imagining a City Built for Big Rigs Imagine a city tailored just for truck drivers, a haven where every establishment, every detail, from the parking lots to the personal amenities, caters to the unique needs of those who spend their lives on the road. This city would feature drive-throughs spacious enough for rigs, abundant parking for both brief rests and longer stays, and amenities that go beyond the usual truck stop necessities. Picture jacuzzis with massaging jets to ease the aches of long hours behind the wheel, and restaurants offering a variety of health-conscious options.Such a city could provide spaces for fun and relaxation too, like venues for truck shows or concerts, places where drivers could get out, stretch their legs, and enjoy some leisure time atop their trailers. The community might also lack fast-food chains, replaced instead with healthier options and local eateries fostering a sense of close-knit community. The concept extends beyond mere leisure and convenience. With large warehouses and efficient infrastructure, this city could reduce the need for extensive driving, allowing drivers to maximize their rest periods and maintain better overall health. It could also serve as a strategic logistics hub, making use of abandoned or underutilized ghost towns along typical trucking routes, transforming them into vibrant centers of commerce and interaction. This revitalization could alleviate traffic congestion in major cities and improve the quality of life for truckers who often face the stress of navigating through busy urban centers.Such an innovative approach could lower the incidence of accidents, reduce transportation costs, and offer truckers a lifestyle that respects their role in our economy while acknowledging their unique lifestyle needs. Ultimately, envisioning a city designed for truckers opens up possibilities for transforming the transportation industry into a more sustainable and driver-friendly enterprise. In essence, this trucker’s utopia is not just a fleeting dream but a call to rethink how we accommodate the hardworking individuals who keep our supply chains moving. It's about building community, enhancing efficiency, and above all, creating a space where truckers can feel valued and at home. (The picture shown below is AI generated)

Interesting story on SouthPark Community Partners Skipper. Mixed feelings about this growing #microtransit trend. It's great to have an EV in case you are traveling with a group, but most trips are one person. This #Charlotte area is super safe and low traffic, which would be ideal for free #ebike or scooter rentals. Pros: 👍🏼 Nice zero-emissions #EV 👍🏼 Good for groups 👍🏼 Free Cons: 👎🏼 Continues to promote car-centric behaviors and mindsets: "This is great! Now let's get more of them! Widen the roads! Create dedicated parking spaces and pickup lanes for them!” 👎🏼 Bikes/scooters move more people — debatably faster too. All said, it would be fantastic to see more investment that makes it safe and enjoyable for short commutes like this for pedestrians, cyclists, and other #micromobility modes of transport: pathways, tree cover, protected bike lanes, etc. Improved micromobility infrastructure is proven to have significant positive impacts on increased foot traffic, spend, and customer satisfaction in local businesses; not to mention improved health and quality of life. https://lnkd.in/enaZjvmA #Charlotte
