I walked away from an opportunity. 🤯 Making the decision to decline a position isn't always easy, especially in the fast-paced world of startups. I want to share a recent experience where I decided to politely pass on an opportunity. Here's what gave me pause: Lack of Vision: The founder seemed confused on just about everything. Solopreneur Mentality: It seemed heavily reliant on a single individual. Unenthusiastic Culture: The overall vibe lacked the positive energy you typically find in startups, no one ever smiled (a big no no for me 🛑). Additionally, there were some red flags regarding the offer itself. The founder asked to contribute significantly without a formal agreement, it seemed clear that I wasn't gonna get paid at all, (had some similar experiences in the past). Walking away was an easy decision and I feel much more empowered to be able pick who I want to work with. A startup shouldn't be a sticky blob of technical skills thrown together. Soft skills are the glue that holds everything together and makes it work. DEPLOY is my 5th startup, and people often ask, why do you keep doing this? Simple, it is what I was born to do. It is part of my DNA, and I love it. Also, I have never met a company I liked enough not to sell it, maybe one day. I have learned a ton and made many mistakes. If I can help other founders not make the same mistakes I am all in. Founders if you are thinking about bringing in a Co-Founder or your first C level hire keep an eye out for certian things, good and bad. 1). If he or she demands a certian title - MOVE ON. It might work at a larger company but not at a startup. 2) If there is any evidence of narcisism - MOVE ON. There is a belief that great CEO's or leaders have to have a certain level of narcisism to be successful. This is an old school way of thinking and complete nonsense. 🤡 3) If he/she still believes in the "if we build they come" nonsense - MOVE ON. Listen to your clients they will help you build. 🤡 4) If there is gaslighting or they have issues with controlling their temper - MOVE ON. He/she are to childish to be succesful at a startup. 👹 5) If He/she believes everyone needs to "stay in their lane." - MOVE ON. They have no idea how a startup works. 🤡 6) If they believe in your vision and mission and you will feel it - HIRE IMMEDIATELY. Your vision and passion will get you to 0-1 and 1-10. 💪 7) If you are great at sales and they are technical and a good fit(6) - HIRE IMMEDIATELY. 👏 8) If you are technical and they are great at sales and a good fit(6) - HIRE IMMEDIATELY. Are you about to start a startup or are you already building one? Startups are fast-growth companies that leverage technology to scale, unlike brick-and-mortar businesses that require physical branches in different locations. Before I started a startup, I had been a solopreneur, working on several ventures alone. When I began building a startup a few years back, I discovered that the method of building a startup was far different from doing things solo. In a case like this, changing your approach is important. Startups rely on structures, ethics, and certain codes and cultures to thrive because now, you’re managing more people with different skills, motivations, and backgrounds. From my experience, here are the top three activities all first-time startup founders should get comfortable with: 📌 Firing team members and even customers who are going against your vision and policies. When team members are not productive and are not willing to improve, you have no option but to let them go. There are also certain customers who may act inappropriately in ways that could affect your brand image; you should let them go too, no hard feelings. 📌 Accepting rejections, especially from potential partners and investors, is another skill founders should learn. We understand you see the vision, but sadly, not everyone will want to work with you towards that vision. The best thing is to always keep learning and improving your startup. 📌 Pivoting is another crucial skill. They say no idea is fully formed, and this is true. Many of the world's most successful startups didn't stay with the idea they started with. As a founder, there's no shame in realizing an idea doesn’t work and moving to something else that you have more conviction will work based on insights and personal gut feelings. I have made this post shorter so that you can easily read through and understand. In the past, I made lots of mistakes by not wanting to fire, finding it difficult to accept rejections, and even falling ill and taking time to pivot because of what people would say.
