The Research & Innovation, BITS Pilani team is excited to share a new publication by Dr. Harikrishnan A R and other author published in Physics of Fluids. 🎉   𝐓𝐢𝐭le: Role of retraction dynamics in bouncing to pinning transition during drop impact on cold superhydrophobic surfaces   Highlights: The present study brings out the influence and relevance of retraction dynamics on bouncing to pinning transition of impacting drop on cold superhydrophobic surface. A theoretical framework has been proposed to predict the pinning to bouncing regimes for drop impact over subcooled superhydrophobic surfaces. The Research & Innovation team at BITS Pilani is excited to share a new publication by Nitish Kumar Gupta, Jaspreet Singh , Subhendu Sarkar published in Nanotechnology (Institute of Physics)🎉   𝐓𝐢𝐭le: A hybrid effective medium description for nanoporous gold films and thickness-mediated control of optical absorption Nanoporous gold films have emerged as an ideal substrate for rapid, quantitative detection of analytes with excellent specificity and high sensitivity. Our study investigates thickness-mediated compositional changes and their impact on scattering characteristics of thin nanoporous gold films fabricated through de-alloying process. Specifically, we observe thickness-induced morphological and structural changes across different fabricated samples from 25 to 100 nm in thickness. This results in substantial change in their optical scattering characteristics, which have been captured experimentally and explained by devising a hybrid theoretical model comprising Maxwell-Garnett & Bruggeman effective medium theories. Transducers and Measurement Systems (INSTR F312) is a core course for UG students enrolled in Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering (ENI, as they call it) at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. Today was the concluding session of the MEMS, Microfluidics and Nanoelectronics (MMNE) Lab research activities' showcasing to the students. Thoroughly enjoyed the sessions given by research scholars from the lab. Background shows the picture depicting PCR basics, PoC currently being developed using microfluidic platforms). This highlights the need of the day to focus on interdisciplinary topics, where one utilizes the tools and techniques of one discipline & solves the problem of another (probably with no overt connections, whatsoever). Needless to mention, it's always good to interact with bright, young & inquisitive minds. As the current semester is about to end soon, I thought to pen this gratitude post for the continued learning sessions with everyone involved. Excited to see the phenomenal response to the Dec 5-6 Workshop on Semiconductor Manufacturing Skills @ IISc Bangalore. ISM/MEITY’s aggressive initiative in enabling the India’s semiconductor sector and the visionary projects that are breaking ground have fueled the need for a MANUFACTURING SKILLED WORKFORCE. Design is important – but now India needs SEMICONDUCTOR Manufacturing skills!  Appropriate curriculum has been defined in the AICTE 9th April revision. Detailed qualification packs have been developed in the ESSCI/NCVET national occupation standards for the sector. I wrote and contributed actively to the SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING skill standards. We will have the best of the content from global partners like SEMI ( SEMI University) , IITs and IISc and practicing industry Subject Matter Experts. The Research & Innovation, BITS Pilani team is excited to share a new publication by Prof. Shishir Kumar Pandey and other author published in Physical Review Journal. 🎉   𝐓𝐢𝐭le: Computational exploration of a viable route to the Kitaev-quantum spin liquid phase in monolayer OsCl3. Highlights: In this computational study, we explore a viable route to access the Kitaev-quantum spin liquid (QSL) state in a recently synthesized monolayer of a so-called spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator OsCl3. In addition to other magnetic ground states in different regions, a substantial region of small 𝐽H/𝑈 in our Hubbard 𝑈–Hund's 𝐽H quantum phase diagram, obtained by combining second-order perturbation and pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group calculations, hosts Kitaev-QSL phase. Only the first neighbor Kitaev interaction of a smaller magnitude, nearly independent of the choice of 𝑈, is obtained in this region. Experimental tuning of the single parameter 𝐽H to access the QSL state can purportedly be achieved with epitaxial strain in advanced crystal growth techniques. Congratulations to Prof. Tribeni Roy and his team for getting their work published in Carbon. 🎉   𝐓𝐢𝐭le: “A close-packed sphere model for characterising porous networks in atomistic simulations and its application in energy storage and conversion”.     Highlights: Hierarchical (micro, meso & macro) porosity in materials plays a crucial role in influencing the movement of ions which governs the energy and power density during energy storage and conversion. The extant available methods to characterise porosity across scales (nano to meso to macro) lacks rigour and accuracy. Having accurate assessment of the porosity in materials can unlock new designs of electrodes for energy efficient energy storage and conversion devices such as batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells. Through this work, we report the systematic development of a method to fully characterise the carbon porous networks using a molecular dynamics simulation testbed. Our work entails modelling and simulation of porous carbon structures using quenched molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations using Gaussian Approximation potential (GAP) and benchmarking the results with prior literature. This modelling technique can reliably be used for quantitative characterisation of the interconnectivity in porous structures to study ionic movements and charge transfer mechanisms. A new parameter, namely nearest neighbour search (NNS) coefficient was introduced to quantify homogeneity and networking in the porous structures. NNS coefficient increased from 1.62 to 1.92 with decrease of the annealing temperature from 8000 K to 4000 K in carbon.
