Infrastructure in northern Pakistan exists in a delicate interplay between human ambition and natural forces. Roads may create a ground upon which life unfolds, enabling mobility and connection, yet they also inherit the precarity of the land they traverse. Landslides, earthquakes, and floods are not exceptions but recurring elements of this fragile coexistence. This precarity shapes every journey in these regions, with travelers constantly navigating the uncertainties imposed by both terrain and infrastructure. Just days ago, as I traveled toward Gilgit, I read the tragic news of a coaster carrying 26 people that plunged into the river near Thalichi, claiming the lives of all but two passengers. This tragedy, coupled with the ongoing rescue efforts for those stranded in Deosai and Khunjerab due to heavy snowfall, underscores the profound uncertainties embedded in travel across these roads. Thoughts are with the victims’ families, those awaiting news, and the rescue teams striving to overcome immense challenges.
Over 28 hours have passed since two passenger vehicles traveling from Gultari to Skardu went missing in Deosai. The vehicles were carrying 14 passengers who reportedly became stranded in Deosai due to heavy snowfall, which has cut off all ground and mobile communication with them. The Pakistan Army has launched a ground rescue operation, with a team of Army personnel for ground operation to rescue the stranded passengers in Deosai. However, adverse weather conditions and heavy snowfall are posing significant challenges to aerial rescue operations. Meanwhile, similar disruptions were reported on Monday at Khunjerab Pass, where many passengers, vehicles, and cargo trucks were stranded due to heavy snowfall on Khunjerab Top.
