🎄 How to Nail Small Talk at the Christmas Party 🎄 Small talk can be tricky, especially at office Christmas parties where you’re mingling with colleagues from different teams. The key? Be specific and curious. Here are some concrete examples to get you started: 1️⃣ Seasonal Openers: Skip generic questions like “How are you?” and go for something more festive: • “What’s your favorite Christmas tradition?” • “Are you more of a mulled wine or hot chocolate person?” 2️⃣ Reflect on the Year: Instead of asking, “How’s work?” try: • “What’s been a highlight of your year?” • “What’s the most surprising thing you worked on this year?” 3️⃣ Follow Up Thoughtfully: When someone shares, don’t just nod—dig deeper: • If they mention a trip: “What was the best meal you had there?” • If they talk about a project: “What was the hardest challenge you faced?” These questions often spark stories. Small talk doesn’t have to be awkward—it’s about showing genuine interest and creating moments of connection. What’s been your favorite conversation starter at a holiday event? Let’s swap ideas! 🎁

Will anyone else's Christmas parties be done by December 5th? From conversations I'm not the only one who has been invited to a lot of early Christmas parties / lunches (I think a lot is actually misleading - what I mean is that a high percentage of those I will be invited to are happening in November). The first one I was invited to this year was in October - this is a record for me, but asking around I was not the only one. From the conversations I've had the thinking seems to work like this... 1. Last year everyone worked from home during December and did not want to travel into town for Christmas party with anyone other than friends 2. To avoid this happening again, this year we will have our Christmas parties whilst people are still in the office in November, and we will try and get in before Thanksgiving 3. Briefs that are usually being sent out in November, are now going to be sent out in December as no-one can party and write briefs. I know the same suppliers who are currently Christmas partying will be the same people grumbling about working over Christmas (including me) - even though it is our (collective) actions that have caused the change in behaviour. #people #work #behaviouralscience

The Corporate Christmas Party Chronicles 🎄. I know it's only October.......we haven't even got through Halloween yet 🎃 but I was driving home from a client today and started to panic as the person on the radio said Christmas was only 11 weeks or so away!! What?? I'm usually organised and everything sorted by the end of September, but this year - nothing, nada!! There's been so much going on!! But then, I just chuckled to myself and realised that owning my own business now means no Corporate Christmas planning and I can squeeze in some Amazon Prime shopping deals today/tomorrow surely?!! I certainly don’t miss the days of juggling the logistics for these events, where I was the unofficial party planner for multiple locations across the country. "What gifts should we do?" "Should partners be invited?" "What about dietary restrictions?" And don’t even get me started on the alcohol debate—"do we serve wine or stick to sparkling water because someone might be sober?" 🍷❌. Then there’s the communication overload: polls to see who wants what, endless emails about preferences, and trying to cater to every belief and tradition. All while secretly hoping no one whispers through the grapevine, “Is that all we’re worth?” 😅 With only 11 weeks and 1 day until the big day, I can only imagine how many parties have already been booked and gifts decided, and if you're still working through it all - Good Luck - I don't envy you at all!! I’m so glad I’m out of that whirlwind! Now, I can treat myself to what I want, when I want. No more worrying about pleasing everyone else; it’s all about me! 🎁✨. I've been invited to some client Christmas events, and meeting up with like minded professionals to do some "festive brainstorming" 🍾 🥂 which will be fun!! Cheers to self-care over corporate chaos! 🥳 ✳ What have you got planned?? #CorporateChristmasParty #PartyPlanning #OfficeParty #HRChallenges #EmployeeEngagement #WorkplaceFun #ChristmasInTheOffice #LogisticsNightmare #TreatYourself #HRConsulting #ThriveHRM

🎃🍁 It’s October, which means the Halloween decorations are out in full force, and before we know it, “All I Want for Christmas is You” will be playing on repeat. 🎶 As much as I love the festive vibes, it’s also a reminder that the holiday season is a prime time for meaningful connections—both personally and professionally. With the holidays right around the corner, now is the time to start being intentional about how you spend your time. It’s easy to get swept up in the hustle and bustle, but strategic planning is key to making the most of the opportunities ahead. Here’s what I’m doing: Assessing My Valuable Time: Between personal gatherings and professional events, I’m thinking carefully about where to invest my time. Where can I both enjoy the experience and foster positive connections that will carry into the new year? Client Outreach: This is the perfect time to check in on clients, colleagues, and connections. A thoughtful message can go a long way—especially when it’s genuine and well-timed. Being Strategic About Events: I’m reviewing the groups and networks I’m part of and asking myself which events will bring the most value. Whether it’s a holiday party or an industry gathering, I want to make sure I’m showing up where I can truly engage and enjoy the experience. The holiday season is an opportunity to connect with purpose—don’t just fill up your calendar, be thoughtful about how and where you invest your time. What gatherings or events are you most excited for this season? Let’s share ideas below! #HolidayNetworking #BusinessDevelopment #IntentionalConnections #ClientOutreach #MaximizeOpportunities #SeasonOfConnection #StrategicPlanning

We implemented a 4.5 day week for our team in January - here's how we're managing our busy season... 🤔 October is busy season for us as many clients make gifts for their teams, customers, fans, etc. for Christmas. We're keeping the 4.5 day week. So here's what we're doing: 1. All of our team know it's busy season, we've told everyone (sounds stupid I know but I may not always have been really clear 🫠 ). 2. No holidays during October unless critical family event etc. (eg. wedding). We set this expectation months out. 3. We can't be late. Every day matters. This is discussed at every meeting. 4. Super organised. I'm not naturally organised so almost everyone I've ever hired is the opposite. It feels like the army sometimes 😂 . 5. Respond to Clients. Always. Fast. This is in our DNA. I'm expecting we'll have a very busy season but the team will LOVE it - it's fun making stuff and seeing the responses. And, of course, we'll plant some 🌳 's.

Why are Christmas work parties… boring, awkward and completely forgettable? After working behind the scenes at countless events, one thing is clear: Businesses are completely missing the point. • They’re not inclusive. Not everyone wants to down drinks. Not everyone celebrates Christmas in the same way. • They’re lifeless. A set menu, some tinsel and a DJ won’t make people feel appreciated. • They’re a chore. For many, these parties feel more like an obligation than a celebration. This is what I’d do instead: Book an experience: • Escape room • Cooking class • Team Olympics • Secret Santa with a twist… Secret Santa is a classic— it brings the team together and is always a fun, light-hearted activity. But instead of exchanging tacky, last-minute gifts… Why not have employees gift each other their time and skills? For example: • Offering free lessons (like cooking or a language lesson) • Providing a service (like helping with a project) • Sharing an experience (like going for a coffee or attending a concert together) This way, the party becomes about connection, creativity and meaningful interactions. _________________ ✍️What would your ideal Christmas work party look like? #ChristmasParty #TeamBuilding #WorkCulture #SecretSanta #CorporateEvents

Over the weekend I got around to writing my holiday cards (yes, I’m that person) and rushed to the post office to get them mailed before the last-second panic sets in. It’s a tradition I try to keep up every year—because who doesn’t love a good excuse to show you care? As I was frantically scribbling notes and sealing envelopes, I had a realization: holiday cards are genius. Greeting card companies have cracked the code—they’ve created endless occasions for us to buy. There’s a card for literally everything. “Happy First Snow!” “Thanks for Existing!” “Sorry Your Dog Ate Your Couch!” They’ve turned everyday moments into reasons to connect, celebrate, or even just laugh. And that got me thinking: as coaches, what’s stopping us from creating our own opportunities to connect with our audience? Think about it—why wait for a holiday or big event? Create your own “occasions.” Launch a “Motivation Monday Challenge,” send out “Halfway There” check-ins during your programs, or celebrate your clients’ wins with unexpected shoutouts. People love a reason to feel seen and appreciated, even if it’s made up (hello, National Coffee Day). The point is, it’s not about the big gestures—it’s about showing up consistently and giving people a reason to engage with you. And let’s face it, who doesn’t need more little moments of joy in their inbox or life? So, tell me—if you could create your own “holiday” or special occasion for your brand, what would it be?
