Birds make an important part of any ecosystem and we were curious how birds use coffee farms, especially in the absence of humans. One way to observe bird activity is by listening to them! We set up Audiomoths at certain spots of biodiversity-friendly and some not-so-biodiverse coffee lands in pursuit of this understanding. In the company of Ornithologist Dr Vijay Ramesh, whose research is focused on understanding how the environment shapes the ecology and behaviour of tropical montane birds, we hosted ‘Soundscapes’ to share findings from our documentation effort. The popular way of growing coffee involves removing native shade trees which directly contributes to huge habitat loss for birds. Numerous bird species continue to be significantly impacted by agriculture. This is an attempt to look for more ways to conserve bird diversity in coffee farms. If you can’t tell by our name already, we hold the existence of birds undeniably close to us. This blog is about hosting events at a small roastery and kick-starting our bird monitoring programme. https://lnkd.in/gWFD688p

🌿 How can you support ecosystem resilience in the face of climate change? Plant Native Plants: Boost local biodiversity by choosing native species for your garden or landscaping projects. Protect Native Species: Advocate for and support conservation efforts aimed at preserving local wildlife. New research shows that native species have "essentially, no chance to keep up with climate change without human help" due to non-native species populating 100-times faster than native species. No time to become an expert on native plants? Hire ecologically-informed landscape architects and designers to create sustainable and resilient landscapes for you! I know a few. :) #ClimateChange #EcosystemResilience #NativePlants #Sustainability #Conservation #LandscapeDesign #nativeplants #landscapearchitecture #ecology

Today is International Day for Biological Diversity. At Rawlplug, we care not only about the company's development. Ecology is not just an empty slogan for us. We are constantly looking for new solutions that positively impact the environment. Our head office is located in a unique place on the map of Wrocław – among green areas, on the banks of the Oder River. It's a place rich in flora and fauna and our priority is to maintain this. For example, we've built hotels for pollinating insects and beehives, many birds have found a home here, and our meadows are home to hundreds of plants and animals (which look particularly beautiful now – during spring). Biodiversity has an extraordinary impact on sustainability. We believe it's a treasure to be protected. #Rawlplug #BioDiversity #Sustainability #Ecology

Population dynamics in the animal kingdom are more intricate than we often consider. 🌍 While reading an insightful piece on population ecology, it struck me how vital it is to understand not just the numbers but the relationships within ecosystems. A few years back, I volunteered in a wildlife conservation project where we monitored deer populations. We used various methods to evaluate their size and distribution across habitats. Seeing how these numbers connect back to the broader ecological landscape was a lesson in interconnectedness. It highlighted how human activities, like urban development or land use changes, impact these populations. The big takeaway? Understanding population sizes, density, and their interaction with resources can inform better management practices and conservation efforts. 🌱 This knowledge empowers us to help maintain the balance of our ecosystems. What experiences have you had that made you rethink our role in wildlife management? Let's discuss! https://lnkd.in/gKAeq2F4

"Earthworms are a keystone species with potentially enormous effects on above-ground wildlife and ecosystem functioning, yet we still know little about them. But the UK’s first national assessment, published in 2023, found that earthworm populations had declined by a third over the past 25 years. It is possible that the loss of earthworms could already be affecting broader woodland ecology. On average there are 37% fewer woodland birds in British woods compared with 1970, with declines accelerating in the past five years. The loss of worms could be playing a bigger part than we realise. Healthy worm populations are crucial for entire ecosystems, not just birds. Earthworms are ecosystem engineers. As they burrow and feed underground, they break down organic matter, which is then passed along the conveyor belt to smaller organisms. Wormholes create porous structures for water and air to travel through. They play a crucial role in nutrient recycling and soil fertility, which means they significantly contribute to global food production." https://lnkd.in/dw82bnQP
