#BlackTeachers who’ve become BTP Fellows, like the incredible trailblazers from Cohort 4, have called this knowledge-building and co-creative experience one of the most transformative learning journeys of their careers as Black educators. The Black Teacher Project (BTP) Fellowship: Cohort 5 continues this powerful tradition of shared learning, critical friendship, and collaborative liberation work through an 18-month affinity-based experience for fifteen pairs of Black teachers in the Greater Atlanta area. #weneedblackteachers We need less gatekeeping measures. Potential teachers must test to get into teaching prep programs, pass test to graduate from those same programs, test to be certified. Go through additional programs after certification. Graduate from undergrad and pay for a Masters to keep certification. All that for pay that you can barely live on. #weneedblackteachers
The Center’s Sharif El-Mekki shared why #WeNeedBlackTeachers during a hearing in front of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce in Washington, DC. Hiring and retaining Black educators are key steps to supporting student success. We’re doing the work to make it possible through programs like our Training Academy and #BlackTeacherPipeline Fellowship. Read El-Mekki’s full testimony: https://lnkd.in/gqxF7eGf

Many Black students still don't have the same opportunities as others, 70 years after the Brown decision. Maybe that's not news. The extent of these gaps in opportunities, however, and how these gaps impact all of us definitely should be. See the new SEF report below. #milestogo #k12education #highered #racialequity
SEF's report 'Miles To Go: The State of Education for Black Students in America' examines a wide range of opportunity gaps for Black students, including: - Limited opportunity to participate in high-quality early childhood education - Disproportionately low access to rigorous coursework, including Advanced Placement - Less funding in K-12 school districts that serve high numbers of Black students Let's work together together to confront these challenges. Wow! As I reflect on my journey to my current position, I am reminded to always trust the process. On my journey, there were times when I couldn't understand why I did not get the outcome I wanted and it is now, that I understand I was being led to my calling/my purpose - creating intentional programs for Black students from South Central to be successful. As STEM manager for Black College Success, I have had the honor of partnering with USC Viterbi School of Engineering and SoLa Impact to bring all things science, technology, engineering, art/architecture/aerospace, and math (STEAM) to 10th-12th grade Black students in South Central LA. I have been with the org a whole year as of March 7th and I do thank them for trusting me to lead such an impactful initiative. I also am grateful for all the experiences that have prepared and guided me to this point! If you would like to know more about what I do, let's chat!! #studentsuccess #steameducation #blackstudents Reflection of experiences: 1. Being a first-generation student from South Central LA and not knowing how to navigate the college application process I sought help from TRIO, Upward Bound Program. 2. Fast forward, after undergrad I became a college advisor with the USC College Advising Corps assisting students like myself through the college application process. As a CAC advisor I also gained a variety of skills that are relevant to my work today such as, data management, planning, budgeting, facilitating, grant writing, fundraising, network, and the list goes on. 3. After serving with the corp, I transitioned from the k-12 setting to higher education. As an admissions counselor with University of California, Riverside I was able to learn how to become a story teller, recruit, analyze data, problem solve, expand my network and so much more. 4. Simutaneously, I served as a persist coach with SMASH an organization who is leveling the playing field through tech. Now, my background is not in STEM however, through this position I was able to learn more about STEM majors and careers, understand how students should prepapre in high school, through UCR I understand what stands out on an application, and as a coach I understand how students can be successful on campus and after.

At Pearson we are committed to supporting schools across the UK and Internationally in projects which explore #curriculum #innovation, especially where centres recognise that the needs of learners are not being met through current learning opportunities. One such project involved Samuel Whitbread Academy, and the launch of a Higher Project Qualification (#HPQ) focused on the study of #BlackHistory. Year 9 students were given a rich, purposeful and personal opportunity to study historical events, people and stories centred around #blackhistory, and were tasked with identifying a connection between themselves and the history of black people, in a wide range of topics from #sport to #STEM. The programme, which continues beyond the pilot year, ensured the purposeful study of #blackhistory was part of the a #curriculum serving the schools students, where their school #values prioritise #equality and #diversity. #Schools interested in exploring HPQs, providing learners opportunity to study #blackhistory beyond the #curriculum, or simply interested to read the case study, can follow the link below: https://lnkd.in/euF4w45V Interestingly, the school received an #Ofsted inspection during the pilot, and a #deepdive took place into the #History department, who included the #HPQ in their report and judgement of the school. It's time to recognize the incredible foundation that historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have provided for countless successful careers. However, it's also important to acknowledge that some of their current programs may not be keeping pace with the rapidly evolving job market. Many students enroll in college with the ambition of acquiring advanced skills that will set them apart in their future careers. Yet, this pursuit often comes with a hefty price tag and the burden of student debt. The traditional curriculum was crafted for an era dominated by industrial labor. But as we step into the technology age, many programs have yet to adapt. The good news? There are abundant high-paying job opportunities—some exceeding $70k annually—that only require certifications and experience, often obtained at a fraction of the cost of a traditional degree. Talk about a smart investment! While we cherish the value of a formal education, we must recognize that in today's fast-paced world, convenience reigns supreme. That's why our educational system needs to operate with efficiency. Click, learn, graduate—this streamlined approach can open doors to entry-level positions while enabling individuals to continue advancing their skills through tailored degree programs. As African Americans, we're confronted with a growing gap in technological advancement. It's time for a rescue mission. Access to cutting-edge education that reflects the digital age and anticipates future technological trends is vital for our community's advancement. That's where Skilldora comes in. We're passionate about integrating AI into educational curricula, empowering HBCU students with valuable skills and addressing potential biases in the job market. Skilldora is committed to fostering skill development that transcends boundaries and propels individuals toward success. Join us in shaping the future of HBCU education. Learn more about our mission at myskilldora.com/hbcu. Together, let's make strides towards a brighter future! #FutureOfWork #Education #AIinEducation #HBCU #Skilldora

Here are the numbers and the stories. Our fellowship investment in aspiring Black male educators is $27,230 per fellow + additional $35,000 in living stipend over two semesters. That’s a total value of $62,230 to support young men who want to become teachers without ever having to take on the responsibility of being the teacher of record while getting their credential. Since launching in 2021 we have had 70 applicants, accepted 20 into the fellowship, 4 now have their credentials and in classrooms as teachers, 5 in the last year of their program and will have their certifications by May 2025 and 6 new in the pipeline who are just getting started. This is the work. It’s not about them getting a “job” or living in affordable housing. It’s about the deep transformative work that happens over two years in relationship with us (the village) and them establishing their careers and pathways to living in their commnities where they teach. Celebrating Black Belt Graduation: A Milestone in Education Today July 20, 2024, we proudly celebrate a remarkable achievement: #1MillionTeachers earned their black belts in 1st Dan, 2nd Dan, and 3rd Dan in the ancient commercial city of Kano. It was inspiring to see top anchor schools among the honorees and the addition of a College of Education to the esteemed list of black belters. The journey continues, and the flame of excellence in education burns brighter than ever. Our mission is to create lasting excellence in education, ensuring the spirit of 1 million teachers thrives in every classroom, school, and across Kano. "Show me your educational system, and I can tell you how your country is doing. Show me how you treat your teachers, and I can tell you the quality of your schools." We need a grassroots movement to empower teachers. No one else will solve this for us. The #1MT program is designed to be a toolbox for teachers. In a world where technology thrives, great teachers remain irreplaceable. This program is about empowerment: you have the toolbox—what will you do with it? Kano is not just a state but a beacon competing on a global scale. No one has ever become anything without a teacher. Teachers are like the US Marines known for their discipline and resilience. As educators, we must not see ourselves as transient workers but as dedicated professionals shaping the future. UNESCO predicts that by 2030, 50% of current teachers will exit the profession, and the world will need to recruit 40 million teachers, with 15 million from Africa. We must build our capacity and rise to the challenge. The time to act is now.
