Never take anything for granted 🍀 During the Battle of the Bulge, American soldiers fought valiantly to hold the strategic town of Bastogne, Belgium, against the German army’s surprise offensive. The siege lasted from December 20 to 27, 1944, and was a turning point in the war. Here are some accounts from American soldiers who were there: Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe “I don’t know what to tell them” was McAuliffe’s initial response to the German ultimatum to surrender Bastogne. He then famously replied, “NUTS!” to the demand, refusing to yield to the enemy. As the commander of the 101st Airborne Division, McAuliffe led his troops in a fierce defense of the town. Sergeant John Opanowski “I remember the cold, the snow, and the constant artillery fire,” Opanowski recalled. As a member of the 10th Armored Division, he was part of the relief force that broke through to Bastogne on December 26. “We were all just trying to survive and get the job done.” Private First Class Robert E. Lee Lee, a medic with the 101st Airborne, described the dire conditions during the siege: “We were running low on food, ammo, and medical supplies. The wounded were stacked up everywhere, and we did our best to care for them.” He remembered the arrival of General Patton’s Third Army on December 26, saying, “It was like a miracle – suddenly, we had reinforcements and supplies pouring in.” Captain James H. Davis As a company commander with the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion, Davis led his African American troops in a heroic defense of Bastogne. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, they held their ground against repeated German attacks. Davis recalled, “We knew we were fighting for our lives, and for the freedom of our country.” These American soldiers, along with many others, played a crucial role in repelling the German offensive and securing the vital crossroads of Bastogne.
