Commemorating the heroes of the Battle of Normandy. The United Kingdom is marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day through a series of significant commemorations and events, both across the UK and in France. These events honour the brave soldiers (most of them teenagers) who risked and lost their lives for freedom and peace. D-Day is recognised as a turning point in World War II. Known as Operation Neptune, the Normandy landings represented the largest seaborne invasion in history and were a crucial step in liberating Western Europe from Nazi occupation. This successful allied invasion demonstrated remarkable military innovation and international collaboration. While the majority of the personnel involved in D-Day were from the UK, the United States, and Canada, the operation also included significant contributions from Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Greece, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, and Poland. This coalition played a vital role in the allied victory. To commemorate this milestone anniversary, military historians are sharing the stories of Normandy veterans, focusing on those with unique or lesser-known roles in the campaign. These narratives help bring to light the diverse and heroic efforts of all who participated in this historic event, and most importantly keep these memories alive and significant for us all. What a ride! It has been my pleasure to help shape the Veteran Champion movement since 2002 in Central Ohio and in 2009 when the Commander of the Ohio National Guard - in response to 9/11 - appointed me to design and lead a statewide outreach program to educate and engage civilians in support of troops and their families. I experienced firsthand the satisfaction and meaning citizens derive from a better understanding of the military profession and its members and knowing HOW to effectively support them. Many then, and still today, tell me that they get goosebumps when they share how they have made a meaningful difference for those who volunteer to protect and defend freedom. This ALWAYS entails going beyond "Thank You for Your Service." The National Diversity Council is one of the organizations that takes seriously championing the needs of Veterans, as a top-notch talent pool for all employers AND how to foster their inclusion at work. In 2019 my husband Ed (a 25-year active Army Soldier) and I facilitated one of the first Veteran-hiring panels hosted by the Ohio Chapter of the National Diversity Council. Five years later, I am thrilled to be the National Diversity Council's first Veteran-hiring consultant and to be a panelist at this nationwide Manufacturing DEI Summit to talk about how ideally suited Veterans are for the manufacturing industry. As commander, he is responsible for six squadrons and eight detachments, enabling command and control operations for 11 Combatant Commands. DEL 6 provides combat ready forces to operate and maintain the Satellite Control Network and conduct defensive cyber operations for unique space mission networks. Their Guardians, civilians and contractors provide global space access to enable spacecraft command and control, space launch, and orbital operations. Driving innovation is dynamic- running too fast without a well-thought out plan (serves as guardrails) can lead to chaos, play it too safe and your team becomes stagnant. One fact I feel is true, was my favorite quote I saw when visiting the Smithsonian Institution Air and Space museum today in #WashingtonDC , “if everything seems under control, your just not going fast enough”. We must encourage our teams that failure is an important learning mechanism in the #designthinking process. Measure and sunset those projects not hitting metrics and pivot to the next.
