Dr. Karla Fuller, interim dean at Guttman, has received a grant of more than $133,500 from the National Institute of Health to broaden access to computational genomic data science (CGDS) by leveraging Guttman’s educational model focused on experiential and relevant education. Dr. Fuller, the principal investigator on the grant, worked with her research colleague at City College and co-principal investigator, Dr. Deidre Anglin-Roper, on a proposal to create a contextualized curriculum that allows students to build skills in CGDS and be at the forefront of experts in a new field. These rankings employ standardized citation metrics, providing a reliable measure of research influence and impact. The subject-wise bibliometric analysis was conducted by John P. A. Ioannidis from Stanford University and the Elsevier BV - a leading scientific publisher. "I happened to pick up a science magazine on a flight. There was an article about enzymes and evolution. It was fascinating. I learned that our bodies function like molecular machines. The more I read, the more I realized that this was what I wanted to do. I was a nontraditional student in my 20s when I came to LMC and got my associate's degree. Then, I went to Western Michigan University, where I got my bachelor's, master's, and doctorate. I was doing my postdoc at the Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Houston when I saw an opening for full-time biology faculty here. I had wanted to move back to Michigan, so I applied and got the job. That was in 2004, and I have been here ever since. When I first started teaching, we used overhead projectors and transparencies. Now, we have smartboards and AI. The technology has changed, and the field of Biology itself has grown. Look at what we know about the human genome. When I was in school, they thought there were 100,000 genes and most of our DNA was junk. Now, we know we have about 20,000 genes, and the other stuff isn't junk; we just don't understand it well enough. The students have so much more to learn now, but it's all fascinating.  Not many people get to do what they love for a living, and LMC is such an amazing place. There is just a sense of community here. The students, the people I've worked with, what's not to like? 2024 Foulkes Fellow Spotlight: Meet Simon Martina-Perez "I am a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Oxford, where I completed a DPhil in mathematical biology. My research focuses on developing novel methods to integrate quantitative and image-based experimental data to mathematical and deep learning models in biology and medicine. For my postdoctoral work, I have worked in close collaboration with the neuroblastoma team at Children's Mercy Kansas City, USA." Why did you decide to study medicine? "During my DPhil I was involved in several collaborations with experimental and clinical partners, during which I saw how clinical experience directly fed back to the research activities and vice versa. At the same time, the urge to get involved clinically and provide direct care to patients in a clinical setting created a strong desire to train as a physician." What does the future hold? "I hope that being originally trained as an applied mathematician with an expertise in mathematical modelling and machine learning, and then obtaining a medical qualification, will allow me to be an innovator when it comes to designing novel experiments and quantitative methodologies, as well as an early adopter of new methods in my own practice."
