As commonly accepted in the renewables sector, for efficient energy production there is a strong need for efficient, reliable, and long-lasting wind turbines. As previously detailed in the 4th issue of PES Wind Magazine in 2023, Bladena initiated the “Owners Requirements - Phase 2” (OR-P2) project in early 2024. This initiative aims to support the industry towards optimal operational efficiency through collaborative efforts with wind turbine owners (WTOs) and manufacturers (OEMs). As turbines, and their components such as the blades, grow larger, blade failures in the early stages of their lifetime have raised serious concerns. Ensuring robustness and reliability is essential for optimal operational performance. The primary objective of OR-P2 is to close the gap between current industry blade certification requirements and operational conditions. By challenging the current IEC certification processes, the project seeks optimized assessments to enhance blade quality, robustness, and performance, consequently increasing overall reliability—and improving outcomes for all stakeholders. The OR-P2 project thoroughly investigates current design and testing methodologies, moreover, providing actionable insights. This initiative encourages the industry to implement additional, more representative certification requirements in order to ensure higher blade reliability. So far 8 WTOs have decided to join, namely Engie, Shell Global Solutions, Iberdrola, ScottishPower, SR Energy, TOWII, OX2 and another large WTO who wish to remain unnamed at the current stage. With the support of this very strong WTO group, Bladena has initiated discussions with OEMs, test centers, and certification bodies to seek a common understanding of current requirements, how could we achieve a higher reliability level, and joint ownership of the additional requirements. If you are an Owner or Operator interested in the “Owners Requirements – Phase 2” project, joining the project consortium is still open and we invite you to participate in this initiative. For further details about participation or for more information, feel free to contact Find Mølholt Jensen Bladena's CEO and manager of the Owners Requirements - Phase 2 project at fmj@bladena.com. We are looking forward to hearing from you and to having you on board in this potential industry direction-changing initiative! #Bladena #WindEnergy #OwnersRequirements #RenewableEnergy #WindTurbineBlades #Certification #Standards

A thought provoking read around offshore wind energy. My key take out was New Zealand will need to triple the volume of renewable energy generated to meet our net zero targets. Offshore wind offers one of the most credible pathways to increase generation at scale. An average 1 GW offshore wind farm could power around half a million homes. As the studies continue, I'm interested to see how these farms could impact our marine life and marine environment.
BlueFloat Energy New Zealand and Elemental Group are proud to be part of a collaborative of co-funders who have supported the PWC National Offshore Wind Energy Industry Study released today at the Offshore Renewable Energy Forum in Taranaki. The study reveals that offshore wind will play a critical role in helping Aotearoa meet its net zero targets, while contributing nearly $50 billion to GDP and creating 10,000 new jobs. There is massive potential to increase the UK's renewable energy capacity by repowering older windfarms using new technology. We now routinely advise on repowering of wind projects, driven by vast improvements in turbine technology. The average lifespan of a wind turbine is 20 to 25 years. By 2040 more than 60% of the UK's current onshore wind capacity will be older than its expected lifecycle. For Feed-in-Tariff projects, Ofgem have changed its approach to alterations, repairs or replacement of generating equipment at accredited feed-in tariff installations. Previously, replacing equipment could have affected the FITs accreditation of the installation. The act of replacing generating equipment will not now, in itself, result in decommissioning and withdrawal of FITs accreditation. Any such modification would not be taken into consideration unless there was a breach of the FITs scheme rules. Ofgem considers this will allow generators to replace and temporarily remove generating equipment and retain an installation's accreditation. Why is this important? If you have an under-performing, inefficient, older wind turbine you may be able to substantially increase your long-term returns by replacing it with a newer model while still retaining the FIT accreditation. Please get in touch if this might apply to you. We can advise on how this might operate in practice. #windenergy #feedintariff

🗓📌 The Road to 2050 - SEAI Offshore Renewable Energy Technology Roadmap Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) has published its roadmap mapping out the pathway to harnessing Ireland’s ORE potential. The report concludes that fixed and floating offshore wind should play the dominant role in providing energy from our ocean. Galetech agrees with this conclusion and what’s particularly interesting in the report under one of its scenarios is that in order to achieve our 37GW ambition by 2050, 10GW of fixed offshore wind and 27GW of floating offshore wind will be needed along with 11GW of hydrogen electrolysis and 13GW of interconnection. It’s very encouraging to see some of the findings of the report show the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) for floating wind technology approaching that of fixed wind technology over the next decade. While there has been great work on a raft of policy issued over the past year or two by DECC and government agencies, in light of the recent delay to the finalisation of the South Coast DMAP and consequently the ORESS2.1 auction, there is a timely reminder in SEAI’s report that it is important for Ireland to solidify frameworks for offshore #RenewableEnergy soon to reduce uncertainty. The report assumes the right policies and frameworks are in place to achieve the scenarios outlined – it’s clear from the report that timely policy decisions are needed if the annual installation rates detailed in the report are to be realised to meet our targets. 🎯 📜Read full report: 🔗https://lnkd.in/e3EVtgZ5 #WindEnergy #Windfluencer #OffshoreWind #SEAI
