Did you know… October marks Black History Month in the UK, and this year the theme is Reclaiming Narratives. The event began in the US in the 1920s, and was first celebrated in the UK in 1987. It also takes place in Canada, Germany and Ireland and gives everyone the opportunity to share, celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture. So, how can YOU support Black History beyond October? Some actions here you can take to be an ally 365 days a year: Educate Yourself – Commit to continuous learning about Black history, culture, and contributions, beyond what is taught in schools or highlighted during BHM. Diversify Your Network – Actively engage with and amplify Black voices, not just within your professional circles, but also in your personal life.    Challenge Biases and Speak Out – Don’t wait for Black History Month to challenge racism or unconscious biases. Speak up in the moment, whether in the workplace or in social settings.    Hold Your Workplace Accountable – Advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion to be embedded in company policies, recruitment, and promotion practices, all year round. #BlackHistoryMonth24 #Allyship #InclusionMatters

At Berwick Partners, we have been proud to join the nation in celebrating Black History Month. However, as this month comes to end, it is important to recognise why we do this. Despite progress, studies show that 60% of Black professionals still face racism in the workplace. Additionally, 25% of individuals report that assumptions are made about their abilities and character simply based on their race. These statistics highlight the ongoing need to recognise the challenges this community still faces today. The theme for Black History Month 2024 is “Reclaiming Narratives.” This focuses on correcting historical inaccuracies and showcasing the full complexity of Black heritage. Black History Month 2024: Reclaiming Narratives. This year, the theme for Black History Month in the UK is Reclaiming Narratives. What does that mean? It means centring the conversations we have about Black experiences around Black experiences, and allowing Black voices to tell their stories on their terms. It means remembering the pillars of Black History in the UK whilst at the same time discovering and amplifying the voices and stories that have been buried or forgotten. This month provides us all with a fresh opportunity to celebrate the diverse experiences of our Black friends, families, and colleagues, and to reaffirm our commitment to the ongoing work of diversity, equity, and inclusion. #BlackHistoryMonth #ReclaimingNarratives
