Many calls have been made for international investment in Africa to be directed towards urban development projects. Researchers in the Making Africa Urban project are looking into the different transnational processes that are shaping the future of African cities, and the wide range of actors who are involved, as Professor Jennifer Robinson from UCL explains. https://lnkd.in/evkm3-uh #Research #Africa #FutureCities

In recent years, there has been no shortage of news, analysis, or political commentary on the increasingly impactful, varied activities, and probable intentions of global powers in Africa. However, the vast majority of what is projected, and consumed by the global policy and intellectual community is presented through the perspective of the said global powers rather than from an African standpoint. As a result, and against the backdrop of global competition between these powers in Africa, African actors and stakeholders are prone to see the role of the global powers in ways that promote and sustain the global powers’ interests rather than African ones. Press Statement 18th May, 2024 1. It's time to take Africa beyond idealism to a multi-dimensional and functional industrial cosmopolitan, an infrastructural architectural business hub for global economic impact. 2. Africa has more than talent for her transformation. So, our true liberation beckons for [walk-the-talk] intentional purpose-driven vehicles. 3. One of Visionafric's objectives is to activate and translate Africa's organic resources into scientifically attractive products flong-lasting income. 4. Apparently, Africa is now the center of attraction of the world for survival. If it's not so, no one would want to extract from her. There is an urgent need to guide her galaxy against forewarned and unforeseen contingencies. 5. The human resource of Africa is a capital valuable asset for her sustainability, we therefore, encourage and call African patriots to respond to our United Nations of Africa- UNA quest. In unity, integration of interests and values there lies our unbeatable fortified borderless strength. 6. VisionAfric promises the public, transformative activities and programs across its established countries with AVA2050 and other initiatives for proactive engagements. Dr. O. We are happy to share with you our New publication with Lyvane P.N. Nguitchou in African Development Review Entitled "The vulnerability to Climate change in Africa : Does industrial Development matter?" the research is carried out in a context where the role of industrialization in Africa's economic development is still much debated and poorly understood. While industrialization is presented in the literature as a necessity of economic development, Africa despite its need for development has just experienced a long period of deindustrialization. Thus, it is reasonable to ask what the point of deindustrialization was; is it at the root of Africa's economic backwardness; should lost industries be rebuilt or rehabilitated; and would increased industrialization promote economic development? This study provides answers to some of these questions, highlighting the merits of industrialization in Africa and, above all, the need to increase it to make the continent more resilient. https://lnkd.in/eCTymZyG #Sustainable Development #Industrial Development #Africa

My latest refereed article titled "Transformation Deferred: Disparate Development in Post-Apartheid South Africa (1994-2004)" has been published in the Jimma University journal PanAfrican Journal of Governance and Development. The article critically looks at the African National Congress (ANC's) macro-economic policies in South Africa. It focuses on the developmental impact of key socio-economic programmes of the ANC including the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) and the Growth, Employment and Redistribution (GEAR) on two specific issues, viz. access to basic services such as housing, electricity, water and sanitation, and unemployment and the resultant income inequalities. The article attempts to delineate the highly unequal developmental outcomes which continue to exclude vast sections of South African society. Many thanks to Prof. Minhaj Alam for the opportunity to publish the article and the two anonymous referees for their insightful comments. https://lnkd.in/gBFq-i5v

🤝 The European Union has allocated EUR 2 million to the Southern Africa Towards Inclusive Economic Development (#SATIED) programme. This financial backing was announced at the start of a high-level policy dialogue on financing infrastructure development in the face of climate change. On this significant agreement, UNU Rector Tshilidzi Marwala チリツィ マルワラ [丸笑] noted: "This new funding agreement with the European Union marks a significant milestone for the Southern Africa Towards Inclusive Economic Development (SA-TIED) programme. The United Nations University World Institute for Development Economic Research (UNU-WIDER), alongside its partners in South Africa, is bridging critical knowledge gaps to drive inclusive economic growth and support South Africa's national priorities. This landmark agreement underscores the United Nations University’s commitment to achieving sustainable development in Africa." 🌍 The narrative surrounding global powers in Africa is often told from their perspective, overshadowing the African viewpoint. This external lens tends to prioritize the interests of these global powers over African aspirations and objectives. 🌍 It's crucial to recognize and elevate African voices and perspectives, highlighting the agency and strategic reasoning of African stakeholders. By doing so, we can better align with the goals outlined in the African Union's Agenda 2063 and the various objectives of regional economic communities and national policies. Let's ensure that Africa's story is told by Africans, for Africans. 🤝 https://bit.ly/3KpJMwQ #AfricanAgency #GlobalPerspective #Agenda2063 #AfricaFirst

The Economic Report on Africa 2024 published by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) is launched this week at the 10th African Regional Forum on Sustainable Development and it can be downloaded from: https://lnkd.in/e5vPZfmH. The report to which I contributed as the lead author presents a forward looking African narrative for just and sustainable transition with a focus on the fundamental systemic shifts that need to be achieved. But, it also contains some statements that propagate the 'business-as-usual' mindset that were introduced by the Chief Economist's Team at the 11th hour. Despite such limitations, the report presents fresh perspective that includes transition from growth-centered to wellbeing-focused economy with the necessary vehicles. Thus, I encourage all those who are working and/or interested on Africa to widely share and use it.
