Urban Design is a bridging discipline in complex systems that centres on relationships and partnerships for a liveable world. This message resonated with me at the recent Urban Design Round Table - Shaping Liveable Cities through Urban Design, hosted by Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA) on 13 November 2024. Invited speakers Joe Berridge, Wataru Tanaka and Christopher Lee shared their experiences in - A Global Perspective on Designing Better Cities. They also joined as panel in dialogue with Siew Leng Fun and Lay Bee Yap from URA about reimagining urban spaces - Urban Design as a Catalyst for Change Congratulations URA in celebrating 50 years with 2024 box set publication of 4 guidebooks for Singapore Urban Design - A Distinctive & Delighful City - A Green & Liveable City - A Connected & Inclusive City - From Plans to Reality “Behind every great city is the work of urban design that brings together crucial elements in our streets and buildings to make our experience of the city more comfortable and memorable.“ https://lnkd.in/gVx-F7rY A great reminder in how the planning process of care, green strategies and long standing collaboration work through successful urban design to harmonise context, community, connectivity, culture and creativity in a healthy living breathing urban environment. #urbandesign #liveablecities #green #sustainable #regenerative #relationships #partnerships #care #collaboration #context #community #connectivity #culture #creativity #complexsystems

The Knowlton School is pleased to announce that Fernanda Loyola Cardoso has been awarded the inaugural Director’s Travel Prize for her proposal “Singapore: Architectural and Urban Contradictions in Addressing the Critical Zone.” Loyola Cardoso—an undergraduate architecture student with a city and regional planning minor—will travel to Singapore during summer 2024 to research that city’s Gardens by the Bay and other sites. --- from Loyola Cardoso’s research proposal Singapore, a global leader in innovative and sustainable architecture, portrays its green infrastructure in the Gardens by the Bay region as strategies that actively tackle its Critical Zone. Despite these notions, the architectural and urban phenomena present in Gardens by the Bay have infused practices of greenwashing, portraying an unrealistic image of sustainability (Schneider-Mayerson, 2017). The intended research aims to capture the unsustainable architectural and urban contradictions practiced in Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay to further understand the environmental outputs at stake in the Anthropocene. --- Read more https://bit.ly/48hgz0n

Watching and documenting the transformation of Interlachen Country Club over the past year has been a rewarding challenge. Of all the content we created around the renovation, this series is my favorite. In the Fall of 2022, I got inspiration from a building construction timelapse and wondered if I could accomplish the same thing with our golf course. Over the next 6 months, I tested various software, flight paths, and workflows to make something like this a reality. I did tests for height, speed, and routing based on the layout of the time, but knew I'd need to capture the changes in routing (like the 10th green moving 50 yards). My goal was to fly over each hole once a week during construction, but each week presented a different challenge due to what part of the course was being worked on, heavy winds and smoke from wildfires (thanks Canada), maximizing flight time on each battery, etc. I ended up getting pretty close to one flyover a week but I had to make lots of adjustments along the way. I quickly gave up on the idea that each flight was going to be perfect and learned to chip away at optimizing each hole. I did my best to match everything up and trusted that I could do the rest in post-production. We used the footage in different ways over the summer for general course updates, but as construction started to wrap up I spent a lot of time syncing up all these flights and cutting them down into 1-2 minute videos. From there, Andrew Green crushed the narrations for us! It's not easy to succinctly describe all of the changes that happened in such a short amount of time, but he did a great job and really helped bring the final videos to life. We released the videos to our membership one hole at a time in our weekly Connections email starting in February and here we are a couple of months away from the grand re-opening! I learned so much about video production and golf course construction through this project and watching everything come to life has been such a joy!
Our 5th hole has undergone significant changes over the years. As part of our historic course restoration, it’s been dramatically restored to its original Donald Ross design. Check out the link below to hear course architect Andrew Green walk through each hole and witness the transformation as we approach the re-opening in the coming months! https://lnkd.in/gUBuDRWE
