With how visual humans are and how much information we are inundated with, it's essential that you make your content easy to scan and read! Here are a few tips for doing this: 1. Make your paragraphs short and sweet Keep your paragraphs to a few sentences long in long-form content like websites. On social media, keep paragraphs to no longer than 2-3 sentences each. It's even okay to have paragraphs that are 1 sentence long! 2. Use bullet points or numbers When you have lists, use bullet points or numbers to keep them more organized. You can also use emojis on social media as an easy alternative to bullet points. 3. Break things up with headings Use different headings (e.g. H1, H2, H3) to break things up visually. On social media, you can create your own headings (such as in this list), though obviously they won't be different font sizes. 4. Use a big enough font Make sure that the fonts on your website and any materials are large enough for easy reading, especially on mobile devices. 5. The header images for my articles were so ugly to me. At first I was trying to use LinkedIn’s AI-powered feature to generate the header images, but they were very very bad. Second iteration I chose some colors and decided to explore gradients and curves to make some visual interest which was fun, but also messy 👹. I’m not a graphic designer (or a writer either) but I can make (and use) a framework! So on Sunday afternoon I spent some time picking a palette of neutrals and accents that I like, choosing a serif and non-serif, drafting a grid, and exploring more of an icon-based approach to add visual interest. Obviously I’m very limited in my visual skills (and maybe taste too, because I sort of love clashing colors). But I feel like I now have a system that is sustainable. It’s a good reminder to plan ahead, iterate, and also use real-life content when exploring options (e.g. use actual article content instead of just placeholder/dummy text).
