Today in the beautiful vineyards of Chateau de Beaucastel

You might not expect to find yourself in rugged, rocky mountains just outside of one of Spain’s largest metropolitan cities, but that is exactly where you’ll find Bodegas Marañones. Welcome to the foothills of the Sierra de los Gredos region of the DO Vinos de Madrid, and to Bodegas Marañones, a setting of exceptional scenic richness and a benchmark for the region that has developed a cult-like status among wine enthusiasts for its vibrant Garnachas and bewitching Albillo Reals. Today, we’ll fly over Bodegas Marañones’ bush vines of Garnacha and Albillo Real in soils of slate, granite, and schist. Farmed organically, these “heroic vineyards,” 30 to 70 years in age, are planted in remote areas at altitudes of 2,000 to 3,000 feet. Here the terrain not only pushes the vines of Garnacha and Albillo Real to their limits, but also those tending the vines that can only access the area by mule. But while it may not be easy, the quality of the fruit that results from this continental climate region is second to none.

Today Julia Harding writes on Viúva Gomes bringing life back to the sands of Colares, Europe's most westerly vineyards. 'Planting a vineyard is a long-term venture. Or perhaps I should say adventure. A massive investment and no return for at least three years and possibly a lot longer, and, like all farming, even more precarious in a period of climate extremes and unpredictability. Nowhere more so than in Colares on the Atlantic coast of Portugal about 40 km (25 miles) north-west of Lisbon, shown on the World Atlas of Wine map of Lisbon and the Setúbal Peninsula. As Simon Woolf and Ryan Opaz point out in their book 'Foot Trodden: Portugal and the wines that time forgot', Cabo de Roca in the far south-west of the Colares wine region is the westernmost point of mainland Europe, and the windiest. As the photos below show, planting here requires traditional wisdom and skills, courage, a lot of hard work, and a bulldozer. Revitalising Pokolbin: The Cedar Mill Hunter Valley Located on the corner of McDonalds and Broke roads in Pokolbin within the tourist node, the ambitious development seeks to harness the region's viticultural heritage, transforming a 41-hectare site into a vibrant hub for local and international visitors. What is proposed is a multi-faceted development encompassing a museum, convention centre and tourism clusters. Each cluster is designed to offer unique experiences, from exploring the rich history of winemaking in the museum cluster to hosting large-scale events and conference in the convention cluster. The tourism cluster aims to support the principal uses by offering a range of activities, including wine tasting, dining and retail experiences. Historically, the site has been vacant pasture for about 50 years, with recent investigations confirming that the soil profile is not considered to be prime viticultural land and offers extremely limited capacity for wine grape production.
