Making CO2 more affordable for vertical farms and greenhouse growers A Swedish startup based in Västerås, 100 km west from Stockholm, is on a mission to make CO2 more accessible to vertical farmers and greenhouse growers. Direct Carbon's journey advanced last year when the company raised money in a Series C seed round. Ankur Garg, Consultant at Direct Carbon, explains that the company's goal with its small-scale direct air capture (DAC) technology is to provide a practical CO2 solution for growers, helping them transition to green CO2 without the need for large-scale climate change initiatives or expensive carbon removal strategies. "CO2 has become a critical commodity in indoor agriculture, yet premium green CO2 supplies remain costly and challenging for many growers to afford. Vertical farming, in particular, consumes a lot of energy. We aim to offer a more accessible, sustainable alternative without the high financial burden." https://lnkd.in/ewn-ivVM

🚀 Milestone achieved for NitroCapt! 🌱 We're thrilled to announce that NitroCapt has secured its first pre-order agreement with Felleskjøpet Agri, a leading Norwegian farmers' cooperative. This deal, worth 10 million SEK, marks a key milestone for us in the development of our SUNIFER® green nitrogen fertilizer. 💬 "We aim to enhance our sustainable offering with fertilizers that have low greenhouse gas emissions and also promote good agronomy. The agreement with NitroCapt is an important step in this effort. Their technology has the potential to make nitrogen fertilizer both cost-effective and significantly reduce emissions. We know and trust Gustaf Forsberg from his involvement in the development of Thermo Seed, a technology used for combating fungal diseases in seed, which we use successfully today. Scion and our partners are putting biomaterials in action for pearl farming in the Pacific! A promising aquaculture biomaterial trial is currently under way in Tahiti to help the pearl farming industry in French Polynesia become more sustainable. The global plastics crisis is often referred to as a ‘wicked’ problem due to its complex and multifaceted nature. Pacific Island countries contribute less than 1.3 percent of the world’s mismanaged plastics yet are one of the main recipients of plastic pollution, especially through ocean currents. Our Scion team is contributing to the practical application of biomaterials in the pearl farming industry, thanks to a collaborative project with the Université de la Polynésie française (UPF). Recognizing the issue of plastic accumulation in lagoons within the pearl industry, our Scion biomaterials team around Marie-Joo Le Guen, Rob Whitton and Maxime Barbier joined forces with Nabila Mazouni, Margaux Crusot and Tutea R. from the university, and Christophe Delpont from IRD to introduce innovative pearl oyster collectors. This endeavour beautifully merged the realms of materials science with marine biology, showcasing the power of interdisciplinary collaboration and the engagement of industry partner Plastiserd which has manufactured the thousands of collecting plates. [NEWS] 🤝 We are delighted to announce the acceleration of our efforts to create a new path for organic waste recovery ♻️This work is done in collaboration with SUEZ a leading player in circular solutions for water and waste management, and is in line with AFYREN’s core strategy of transforming organic waste streams into resources with real value 🎯The objective is to develop a new, complementary organic waste recovery process, as the current re-organization of biowaste sorting and collection systems will facilitate access to these flows and increase the amount of organic waste available to be processed. 🇪🇺 The work is part of the European AFTER-BIOCHEM project, with support from the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) and is fully in line with European policy on these subjects. Following a successful US$8.7 million fundraise Varaha is exploring Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) for climate benefits. ERW, a technique that accelerates natural mineral weathering, not only sequesters carbon efficiently but also enhances soil fertility. The process involves the application of finely ground rock materials, typically basalt, to terrestrial surfaces such as agricultural fields or degraded land. This is done to increase the rate at which minerals in the rocks react with carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, converting it into dissolved bicarbonates. Varaha, founded in 2022, is committed to aiding smallholders in adopting sustainable practices, thereby generating carbon credits. With over 700,000 acres enrolled across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Kenya, Varaha is on a mission to transform agriculture with innovative, earth-friendly solutions.
