1️⃣ Trump Demands Panama Canal Fee Reduction for U.S. Ships or Its Return to U.S. Control U.S. President-elect Donald #Trump recently posted on the social media platform Truth Social, calling Panama Canal fees charged to U.S. Navy and commercial ships "outrageous." He demanded a reduction in these charges, stating that otherwise, Panama should return control of the canal to the United States. The U.S. is the canal's largest customer, accounting for nearly three-quarters of the goods transiting through it annually. The Panama Canal, a critical link between the #Atlantic and #Pacific Oceans, was transferred to Panama's government in 1999. Severe droughts in 2023 significantly reduced the canal's capacity, disrupting global trade flows. #PanamaCanal #US #globaltrade #supplychain 2️⃣ Port of Los Angeles Sees 16% Year-over-Year Growth in November Throughput The Port of Los Angeles (#POLA) recently reported handling 884,315 #TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in November, marking a 16% year-over-year increase. For the first 11 months of the year, the port processed 9,375,735 TEUs, a pace 19% higher than in 2023. Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, stated, "We are on track to surpass 10 million containers for only the second time in our 117-year history." #LosAngeles 3️⃣ Indonesia Launches Advanced Container Scanners to Strengthen Oversight Indonesia's Ministry of Finance Customs Office has introduced advanced import-export container scanners at Jakarta's Tanjung Priok Port to support the president's anti-smuggling initiatives and enhance the efficiency, transparency, and security of cargo flows. Director-General of Customs and Excise Askolani highlighted that the scanners align with Minister of Finance Regulation No. 109/PMK.04/2020 on customs areas and temporary storage. This step represents a significant improvement in port governance. The scanners can quickly and accurately inspect container contents without requiring physical unpacking, streamlining inspections, reducing wait times, and effectively preventing the smuggling of illegal or hazardous goods. #Indonesia #containerscanners #importexport #TanjungPriok 4️⃣ Thailand to Ban Industrial Plastic Waste Imports Starting 2025 The #Thai government has announced a complete ban on the import of plastic waste used as industrial raw materials, effective January 1, 2025. The new policy amends Thailand's customs tariff handbook regulations on the import of plastic scrap, fragments, and waste, replacing the previous rules that allowed imports under specific conditions with approval from the Industrial Works Department. Arada Fuangtong, Director-General of the Foreign Trade Department, emphasized that importers affected by the policy have been notified to complete all necessary import procedures by December 31. #ThailandCustoms #Import #IndustrialPlasticWaste #industrialrawmaterials #ForeignTrade #importer 👉 https://lnkd.in/gqZcGPNi

😎 Smart: Want to avoid shipping headaches and Not pay tariffs? ❌ America's West Coast ports have stranded many companies' products at sea or in the shipyard. The continuous labor disputes between the dockworks' union and those that manage the ports take on a life of their own. Reports of workers stopping or slowing work are commonplace. ❌ Before the labor dispute, it was Covid disruptions and the lock down of China's main export hubs. Before that raising fuel prices added undue costs to manufacturing overseas and excessive reliance on China. Here at Terravive, we believe that companies should secure their supply chains at home and have hybrid trade policies. When you deal with companies that manufacture locally in the US or even North America, you are not at the mercy of a foreign government, labor disputes or even bad weather. 🚫 A little known fact is how much GHG/CO2 pollution is generated from shipping products across the Pacific or manufactured in unregulated factories in Asia. 🇺🇸 Terravive avoids all those costly headaches by manufacturing all our products in the US. I'm new to the industry and want to hear what people think about this article from Container News . This article basically speaks on the increase in rules and regulations at the Singapore Port come September. This is a new set of customs rules includes advanced pre-filing for export/import/transshipment cargo information. All the long haul trades will be forced to submit import cargo info 12 hours prior to vessels berth or face the penalty. I believe organizational policies can be of great benefit to the industry. However, I'm curious how people feel about these "time-definite requirements?" How are these rules currently being perceived for all parties involved? How will this play out in the upcoming months? https://lnkd.in/eQtnCxcW #gnosisfreight #logistics #supplychain #SingaporePort

✈️ In international trade, Harmonized System (HS) codes are the cornerstone for classifying goods. They offer a standardized way to categorize products, facilitating smoother cross-border transactions. Here's how HS codes streamline cargo classification: ➡️ Universal Identification: HS codes provide a universal language for identifying products worldwide. Each code is a unique numerical sequence assigned to specific goods, enabling easy recognition and categorization. ➡️ Precise Classification: These codes offer a structured system that accurately classifies products into clearly defined categories. ➡️ Trade Facilitation: HS codes simplify customs procedures by providing a common classification framework. ➡️ Tariff Determination: Governments use these codes to set duty rates, ensuring fair and consistent application of customs duties across various goods. ➡️ Accurate Statistics: These codes aid in analyzing trade patterns, tracking trends, and compiling reliable data crucial for policy-making and economic analysis. 🌐 Our team at Varoutsikos SA is well-versed in navigating these codes to ensure accurate cargo classification, regulatory compliance, and efficient customs clearance. It’s been another eventful week in the logistics and shipping industry, both locally and globally. From weather disruptions to strategic industry shifts, here’s your latest AMX Global round-up to keep you informed. Local Developments: 1. Durban Port in Turmoil: Delays and Debates Over Privatisation Durban’s port operations ground to a halt yesterday due to extreme winds, with gusts reaching 90 km/h, exacerbating ongoing delays. The situation highlights the challenges facing importers, exporters, and transporters in South Africa. The recent court ruling halting the takeover of Durban's port by Philippine company ICTSI has sparked debate about the future of port privatisation. Transnet maintains that the contract remains intact, but the legal roadblocks raise questions about the broader implications for the South African logistics sector. Meanwhile, union jubilation over the court interdict leaves many wondering about their true motivations, particularly as they were absent from earlier negotiations. The port resumed limited operations this morning, but with restrictions still in place, delays are expected to continue. 2. Port Performance Snapshot: Cape Town: Despite strong winds and fog, the port managed to handle 6,018 containers, maintaining steady operations. Durban: Weather and equipment breakdowns led to delays, with Pier 1 recording 5,769 gate moves and Pier 2 handling 11,196 containers. Crane outages remain a significant issue. Richards Bay: Lost 33 hours due to equipment issues and adverse weather conditions. 3. Rail and Cargo Challenges: Rail Cargo: Rail volumes out of Durban dropped by 15%, further straining logistics. Air Cargo: ORTIA air cargo volumes decreased by 8%, averaging 964,347 kg per day. Cross-Border Delays: Border crossing times increased, particularly due to the implementation of new biometric identification systems. Weekly Industry Highlights Westfalia Exports to China: South Africa's Westfalia Fruit has made a major leap by exporting its first batch of avocados to China. This milestone opens new doors for South African agricultural exports in one of the fastest-growing markets. Red Sea Oil Transit Drops by 50%: Security concerns in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait have led to a significant reduction in oil shipments, forcing vessels to reroute, increasing costs and delays. Collaboration to Improve Shipping Schedules: Sea Intel and eeSea have teamed up to enhance shipping efficiency by providing detailed port-to-port transit data, a game changer for supply chain optimisation. Citrus Export Season Challenges: South Africa's 2024 citrus export season has faced delays due to weather disruptions, logistical bottlenecks, and equipment failures, affecting output and the entire supply chain. At AMX Global, we’re committed to adapting to these challenges and ensuring seamless solutions for our clients. Stay tuned for more updates from the AMX Global team! #LogisticsNews #IndustryUpdate
