🌿 Highly sensitive people (HSP) have a stronger connection to nature, according to new research out of Brock University’s Water Resilience Lab. Could honing in on this subgroup improve sustainability efforts? “Determining if highly sensitive people have greater potential for sustainability leadership than middle- or low-sensitivity people would be an asset for society, but we have to test that possibility with more research,” says Mitacs postdoctoral fellow Jennifer Holzer, lead author on the first paper examining HSPs in the context of sustainability. The paper, “People with sensory processing sensitivity connect strongly to nature across five dimensions,” was co-authored by Jennifer, Gillian Dale and lab director Julia Baird, Associate Professor in Brock University Environmental Sustainability Research Centre and the Department of Geography and Tourism Studies and a Canada Research Chair in Human Dimensions of Water Resources and Water Resilience. Lead Tunisia’s Marine Future Join the MSc in Blue Economy and Environmental Sustainability at the University of Monastir! A forward-thinking program developed as part of the BLUERA Project. The program results from close collaboration between academics, decision-makers, and industry professionals. It addresses the pressing environmental issues affecting marine and coastal ecosystems, providing students with a dual approach to marine science, integrating both molecular and ecosystemic perspectives. This research-oriented master’s degree prepares students for careers in aquatic environmental fields, equipping them with practical and theoretical knowledge, and tools from emerging sciences such as microbiological engineering, geomatics, and environmental modelling. National Impact Tunisia’s aquatic environments are under severe pressure from pollution, overfishing, and other human activities, leading to degraded water quality and biodiversity loss. The program supports Tunisia’s commitments to international environmental conventions and strengthens its role as a key Mediterranean country in the field of environmental protection. Graduates will contribute to improving marine policies, environmental monitoring, and sustainable economic practices, positioning Tunisia as a leader in the Mediterranean’s blue economy "This MSc program represents a critical step toward addressing the environmental challenges faced by Tunisia’s coastal regions. By training skilled professionals in blue economy and environmental sustainability, we are not only protecting our ecosystems but also building a sustainable future for our economy and society." New paper exploring the role of ecosystem services within regional sustainability 🌎 Our recent research critically examines the pros and cons of incorporating ecosystem services into the Regional Safe and Just Operating Space (RSJOS) framework, a model for environmental governance and policy-making. Ecosystem services have a potential role to play in linking ecological ceilings and social foundations, both essential for evaluating the RSJOS. By connecting "safe" and "just" boundaries, ecosystem service flows provide a promising method for aligning environmental and social goals. However, despite the potential, there are still challenges and assumptions that limit how ecosystem services can be used within the RSJOS framework. This work is a collaboration between Chinese Scholarship Council PhD student Qin Tao, Brett Bryan, and colleagues from Nanjing Agricultural University during Qin's time at Deakin University within the School of Life and Environmental Sciences - Deakin University. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gK3dR8mH #Sustainability #EcosystemServices #EnvironmentalGovernance #SustainableDevelopment #SafeAndJustOperatingSpace #ChineseScholarshipCouncil
