We've learned how conservation preserves Bend, Oregon's sense of place, and traditional communities in coastal Brazil hope to do the same. The residents' association in the Cassurubá Extractive Reserve is working to bring community tourism to the mangrove ecosystems to ensure the survival of both his community and the reserve, which depends on people remaining there and continuing their traditional livelihoods. Not only would tourism give families a reason to stay, but it would also attract much needed services and ensure that traditional communities can maintain control over their territory and preserve the environments they depend on. https://lnkd.in/dQHD-die

In this species spotlight, meet the Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni), 🐟 one of the rarest and most striking fish found in Indonesia’s Banggai Archipelago. 🌊 Why is the Banggai cardinalfish so important? The Banggai cardinalfish helps maintain balance in coral reef ecosystems by controlling populations of small invertebrates and serving as prey for larger marine predators. It also supports ecotourism by attracting divers and snorkelers to its native habitats in Indonesia, boosting local economies and promoting conservation efforts. 🚩 Why is it threatened? Characterised by a silver body with black stripes and white spots, this small fish has become iconic among aquarium enthusiasts. Unfortunately, its popularity has led to overexploitation, and its restricted range makes it particularly vulnerable to extinction. 🌏 Protecting the Banggai cardinalfish Conservation efforts – including more sustainable aquarium trade practices and habitat protection – are essential to ensure the survival of this endangered, iconic, and important species. Whales have been granted legal “personhood”. We LOVE this! In early April, a treaty was signed by Indigenous leaders of New Zealand, Tahiti and the Cook Islands to recognise whales as legal persons. According to The Conversation, the declaration was put in place to protect the rights of whales to migrate freely. It will also allow the use of mātauranga Māori (the traditional knowledge of the Māori people) in combination with science to help safeguard these marine mammals. Not only do whales have significant cultural meaning for groups like the Māori, they also play a vital role in balancing the delicate ecosystems of the ocean. What threats do whales face? While we have made big strides in whale conservation, there are still many challenges faced by these creatures which threaten their survival. These include: Whaling: The hunting of whales for food and oil. Climate change: The warming of oceans poses many threats to the survival of whale populations. Ships: Whales are often injured or killed when struck by ships. Plastic pollution: The accidental ingestion of plastics found in the ocean could be deadly for whales. But there are things you can do to help, like: Volunteer: Get hands-on and join whale conservation programs like the ones GVI offers in: South Africa: https://lnkd.in/dDc22fC9 Canary Islands: https://lnkd.in/dZtkVMS2 Agents can partner with us: Partners@gviprorams.com - Speak with Corne to bring these experiences to your clients Reduce your carbon footprint: Try to stay away from single-use plastics and, where possible, recycle or upcycle plastic products instead of throwing them away. Travel responsibly: Steer clear of tourist activities that could harm or disturb whales. Raise awareness: Educate yourself and others about the threats facing whale populations. #whaleconservation #marineconservation #ecotourism #TravelTrade

Since we're celebrating jaguar's international day today, here are some positive news about this species conservation efforts in Latin America: 1. Jaguar 2030 Roadmap: Fourteen countries have committed to protecting jaguar habitats through the Jaguar 2030 Conservation Roadmap. This initiative promotes habitat connectivity, sustainable development models, and financial support to secure jaguar populations across their range. The program includes projects like ecotourism in Costa Rica and habitat restoration in Honduras. 2. Rewilding in Argentina: Argentina has made strides with jaguar reintroduction in El Impenetrable National Park. Female jaguars have been released to strengthen genetic diversity and establish a breeding population, reversing the species' decline in the region. This complements similar rewilding efforts in the Iberá wetlands, where restored ecosystems also benefit local communities through nature-based tourism. 3. Corporate Conservation in Colombia: The "Conexión Jaguar" program, led by ISA, has helped preserve over 400,000 hectares of jaguar habitat while offsetting millions of tons of CO₂. This initiative integrates corporate responsibility with conservation, benefiting jaguars and their ecosystems while addressing climate change.
