Ok, so what projects have federal funds made possible to further the #HumanRightToWater? 📍Texas colonias Settled in the 1950s and ‘60s, many colonias along the Texas-Mexico border still don’t have running water or sewer service and instead rely on trucked-in water stored in plastic tanks for bathing and washing, and bottled water for drinking and cooking 🚰🍳 Now a collaboration between local, nonprofit (including Environmental Defense Fund), and state leaders is bringing more than $4 million in funding to address drinking and wastewater needs in rural communities in Presidio County, Texas. Some of the funds will make it possible to dig deep wells that can access groundwater and then pipe it to homes. Rural communities and underserved populations often need help in developing and maintaining community infrastructure. Improving access to communications, providing safe drinking water, protecting groundwater and watersheds, treating and properly disposing of wastewater, improving educational efforts, and creating forward thinking planning for economic growth are all important for sustainability. Regional partnerships such as Rural Community Assistance Partnership Incorporated (RCAP) are sometimes critical for these communities. Chiquita Canyon Landfill recently provided updates on its community relief fund, which was set up amidst legal challenges and a significant environmental issue. A high-temperature reaction site at the landfill generates approximately 1 million gallons of potentially toxic leachate per week, along with landfill gases that contribute to pervasive odors in the area. This has led to around 2,000 monthly complaints from nearby residents and ongoing lawsuits seeking to shut down the facility. The landfill's community relief fund has disbursed nearly $978,850 between March and May, assisting residents with various costs, potentially including relocation expenses due to the landfill's impact. Applications for assistance have been steadily increasing each month. Despite the fund's activity, concerns about transparency persist. The landfill has faced criticism for not disclosing the specific formula used to determine eligibility and allocate funds. Residents and community leaders have expressed frustration over the lack of transparency, emphasizing the need for clear guidelines on how funding decisions are made. In response to these concerns, the landfill has announced additional in-person meetings to provide more information and address questions from residents. Some of the most vulnerable sections of SA’s coast will be restored and better protected with the announcement of $1.2m in state government funding for council and community projects. Eleven council projects were awarded grants under the Coast Protection Board’s 2024-25 Coast Protection Grants Program. Those grants will support a range of projects across the state, including a sea wall at Encounter Bay, foreshore design works in Port Vincent and the replacement of a boardwalk bridge at Streaky Bay. Six community groups will also share in almost $31,000 under the Community Participation Grants Program for works including a walking track at Constance Bay and dune restoration at Elliston. DEW Water Coast Manager David Osborn said the funding would help unlock about $7.5m in vital works to protect and enhance our coast. “South Australia has thousands of kilometres of beautiful coastline to enjoy, but it needs to be managed for future generations,” Mr Osborn said. “Councils and community groups are often at the forefront to protect some of our most vulnerable sections of coastline,” he said. Salmon recovery partners throughout the state—including Tribes, local governments, and nonprofits—have seen their projects delayed or cancelled due to impacts from a change in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) no-rise policy. The no-rise policy now mandates costly analyses for salmon habitat restoration projects. Shouldn't such works be undertaken AFTER a community consultation (and review of DPR) rather than creating this kind of situation and then saying work was 'scientific'. Also should donors be held accountable as well in such scenarios (as donors all claim positive impacts as their impacts, so why not be accountable for negative impacts too?). My view is that if the work was done under an RFP type process (where program design emerged form donor) and/or Donor team had a formal sign-off authority to NGO's program plans, the donors need to be held equally liable.

Save The Bay applauds the Coastal Resources Management Council’s (CRMC’s) Planning and Procedures (P&P) Subcommittee on their unanimous vote to recommend that the full Council deny the water type change petition submitted by Quidnessett Country Club. “This was a responsible vote by the subcommittee not to change the rules at the behest of a violator,” stated Topher Hamblett, executive director of Save The Bay. “However, we still contend that the politically appointed Council should not have entertained the petition in the first place and have only aided Quidnessett Country Club’s efforts to circumvent the law. Now it is time for the full Council to put an end to this illegitimate process by upholding its own subcommittee’s recommendation and uphold the enforcement order requiring this illegally-built wall to come down followed by immediate restoration of the shore.” It has been over 470 days since CRMC’s staff issued an enforcement order to Quidnessett Country Club to take down the wall and restore the shore. The illegally-built wall continues to impair shoreline access, and negatively impact Narragansett Bay. Learn More: https://lnkd.in/ekvVxd6U

The new Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage Water Action Plan 2024 aims to clean up our rivers, lakes and coasts. The plan, launched today by Minister of State Malcolm Noonan TD, is Ireland’s roadmap to protect and restore our rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal waters and groundwaters. The plan will see an additional 300 waterbodies achieve ‘good’ status by 2027, with targeted measures to improve over 500 more. There will also be a multi-billion Euro investment in wastewater infrastructure, strengthened action on nitrates and a focus on compliance and enforcement.
