Coagulation is a key process in water treatment used to remove suspended particles and impurities from water. The process involves the addition of chemicals (coagulants) to destabilise and aggregate these particles into larger clumps, known as flocs, which can then be more easily removed from the water. Water purity is crucial to preserve the integrity and life of the boilers and it should be viewed as a contributor to reduce unexpected repair costs which sometimes are less expensive than production losses. Same applies to chemical cleaning costs to restore the boiler´s reliability. This principle needs to be applied to the entire life of the boiler, in operation and out of service. The photo shows the condition of a recovery boiler that was not subjected to a standard preservation procedure and then air and water got in contact with the steam drum surfaces. The small orange spots reflect incipient oxydation or the principle of bacteria corrosion. Both reduce of course the thickness of the drum metal.
