Electronic waste (e-waste) is the fastest growing solid waste stream in the world, increasing 3 times faster than the world’s population. Less than a quarter of e-waste produced globally in 2019 was known to be formally recycled; however, e-waste streams contain valuable and finite resources that can be reused if they are recycled appropriately. Here at Mint Innovation, we are tackling the problem head-on with our advanced chemical recycling process, extracting valuable precious metals and circulating it back into the economy. https://lnkd.in/gtrG4hrj)
It takes a collective to make global change! 🌏 Whilst we’re making steady progress in pioneering technology to recover important metals from e-waste and other waste streams, we can’t solve the world’s growing e-waste problem alone. To assist us in our mission of helping to restore the planet, we need a strong community of advocates to help us spread awareness and create impact. We’ve started doing this already through events and outreach with local schools and organisations, however we’re committed to taking this to the next level. With that said, we’re excited to share that we’ll be launching a new initiative shortly to help us create a movement and accelerate change. Keep an eye out on our socials and website for updates! 👀 In the meantime, read about the presentation and collection drive event we ran with Bucklands Beach Intermediate last year. #Sustainability #EWaste https://lnkd.in/g5gyg-3j

Every piece of e-waste collected is a crucial step towards reducing environmental impact and a chance to teach valuable skills. E-waste contains hazardous materials that can harm the environment and human health if not disposed of properly. By participating in our e-waste collection, you're not only helping to prevent these toxins from polluting our soil and water but also contributing to the circular economy by promoting the reuse and recycling of materials. But it doesn't stop there. Our initiative is about transforming waste into opportunities. The electronics we collect aren't just discarded items; they're valuable resources for education and skill-building. Through our program, we empower youth by teaching them how to repair and refurbish these devices, giving them hands-on experience in a growing field. This practical knowledge can open doors to new career paths and foster a deeper understanding of technology and sustainability. By getting involved, you're helping to create a cleaner environment and investing in the future of our youth. Today is #InternationalEwasteDay. As the world continues its rapid digital transformation, the surge in electronic devices has led to an alarming rise in electronic waste. According to the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Global E-waste Monitor, by 2022, the world generated a staggering 62 billion kg of e-waste, or an average of 7.8 kg per capita. This is the equivalent of 1.55 million trucks filled with e-waste lined up along the Earth's equator. The quantity of #ewaste is expected to rise to 82 billion kg by 2030. Alarmingly, only 22.3% of this e-waste was properly collected and recycled. This imbalance underscores a massive challenge for both the environment and resource sustainability. Technology nearing the end of its initial life cycle holds vast potential for a second life. We believe that #remanufacturing is a cornerstone of a #sustainablefuture. Remanufacturing provides a responsible alternative to landfill disposal. This meticulous process involves restoring and upgrading used devices, extending their lifespan and reducing the demand for virgin raw materials. By adopting a circular economy that prioritises #reuse and #recycling, we can mitigate the environmental impact of e-waste. On this International E-waste Day, let's pledge to adopt #sustainableIT practices that contribute to a positive environmental impact. Because IT shouldn’t cost the Earth. #EwasteDay #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #TechForGood #CircularComputing

Last week, we kicked off our Ontario College and University Sustainability Professionals AGM talking about becoming a zero-waste campus. Attendees toured the campus with Angela Plant to see waste-themed initiatives including the Free Store, Textbooks4Change, and our recycling stations. Afterwards, we launched into a waste-management-themed panel with representatives from ECGO , CleanRiver Recycling Solutions, Friendlier, and the City of Ottawa. Together, we engaged in crucial discussions about the future of waste management, exploring innovative solutions and collaborative strategies to tackle pressing challenges. Key topics included: 🔄 Recycling Infrastructure: Exploring ways to enhance and optimize our recycling systems to increase efficiency and waste diversion rates. 🔧 Technology Integration: Harnessing the power of technology to revolutionize waste diversion efforts and incentivize recycling behaviours such as with the ECGO app. ♻️ Reusable Containers: Embracing sustainable alternatives to single-use items and promoting the widespread adoption of reusable containers like Friendlier. 🏙️ Collaborating with Municipalities: Strategizing large-scale recycling initiatives and forging stronger partnerships with local governments to create impactful, community-wide solutions. In my opinion, this event marks an important inflection point that will be looked back upon in decades to come as a historical milestone. What milestone might you ask? The point where we realized that it takes a microcosm of the entire value chain to make whole system changes. Getting the "value chain" together doesn't make change happen (that's called an industry conference). Change comes from combined energy and those that are doers versus want-to-doers. I have never felt energy like that before! So many doers and so much Regenerative Energy!!!! "No snowflake takes the responsibility for the avalanche" is a saying I have heard many times. What I now realize from attending Improving the Circularity of Compostables and Compost is that if enough snowflakes work together, than can prevent one from happening. Let's be snowflakes y'all before its too warm to exist!
All we can say is WOW. Thank you to everyone who showed up and fully engaged in the three day co-creative strategic planning process to improve the circularity of compostables and compost. If you want to know what happened, reach out to a colleague who was there. We are busy organizing next steps and will be sharing them out later this week. For now, all we can say is THANK YOU! Thank you to Evan Kruse with Diverse Video who was our photographer and brilliantly captured the essence of the experience. #compost #improvingthecircularityofcompostablesandcompost #futuresearch
