Today is #InternationalEwasteDay. As the world continues its rapid digital transformation, the surge in electronic devices has led to an alarming rise in electronic waste. According to the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Global E-waste Monitor, by 2022, the world generated a staggering 62 billion kg of e-waste, or an average of 7.8 kg per capita. This is the equivalent of 1.55 million trucks filled with e-waste lined up along the Earth's equator. The quantity of #ewaste is expected to rise to 82 billion kg by 2030. Alarmingly, only 22.3% of this e-waste was properly collected and recycled. This imbalance underscores a massive challenge for both the environment and resource sustainability. Technology nearing the end of its initial life cycle holds vast potential for a second life. We believe that #remanufacturing is a cornerstone of a #sustainablefuture. Remanufacturing provides a responsible alternative to landfill disposal. This meticulous process involves restoring and upgrading used devices, extending their lifespan and reducing the demand for virgin raw materials. By adopting a circular economy that prioritises #reuse and #recycling, we can mitigate the environmental impact of e-waste. Last week, we kicked off our Ontario College and University Sustainability Professionals AGM talking about becoming a zero-waste campus. Attendees toured the campus with Angela Plant to see waste-themed initiatives including the Free Store, Textbooks4Change, and our recycling stations. Afterwards, we launched into a waste-management-themed panel with representatives from ECGO , CleanRiver Recycling Solutions, Friendlier, and the City of Ottawa. Together, we engaged in crucial discussions about the future of waste management, exploring innovative solutions and collaborative strategies to tackle pressing challenges. Key topics included: 🔄 Recycling Infrastructure: Exploring ways to enhance and optimize our recycling systems to increase efficiency and waste diversion rates. 🔧 Technology Integration: Harnessing the power of technology to revolutionize waste diversion efforts and incentivize recycling behaviours such as with the ECGO app. ♻️ Reusable Containers: Embracing sustainable alternatives to single-use items and promoting the widespread adoption of reusable containers like Friendlier. 🏙️ Collaborating with Municipalities: Strategizing large-scale recycling initiatives and forging stronger partnerships with local governments to create impactful, community-wide solutions. ⚙️ #FixIt, Don't Ditch It: The #RightToRepair Revolution The world's generation of #ElectronicWaste is rising five times faster than documented e-waste recycling, according to United Nations. The 62 million tonnes of e-waste generated in 2022 would fill 1.55 million 40-tonne trucks, enough to encircle the equator! Isn't that crazy?! There's good news, though! The 🇪🇺 European Parliament recently gave consumers a powerful tool to combat #Ewaste: the Right to Repair! This means cheaper repairs, longer product lifespans, and less tech ending up in landfills (https://lnkd.in/dF47QinB). 🇫🇷 France is already making it happen with their #RepairabilityIndex! This handy tool helps consumers choose electronics that are built to last (from laptops and phones to washing machines)—pretty cool, huh? Why is the #RightToRepair important? It's not just about saving money on replacements (although that's a definite perk!). This movement has significant #environmental and #social benefits: ♻️Reduces #Ewaste & improves #Health: By extending the lifespan of electronics, we generate less electronic waste, which is often dumped in developing countries with devastating health consequences for local populations. 🙋🏻Empowers #Consumers: We have more control over the products we purchase and the freedom to choose who repairs them. 🌱Promotes #CorporateSustainability: Companies are incentivized to design products with repairability in mind, leading to a more sustainable electronics industry. 🌍 The Truth About E-Waste: Why Sustainable Tech Choices Matter Did you know that e-waste is the fastest-growing waste stream in the world? 💻📱 Every year, we generate over 50 million tons of electronic waste—much of it ending up in #landfills, leaching harmful chemicals into the soil and water. This #wastefulness doesn’t just harm the planet; it’s also a missed opportunity. 70% of e-waste could be #refurbished, reused, or #recycled, yet most of it is discarded after only a few years of use. This destruction comes at a high cost: 🌱 Resources drained—Mining for new materials like gold and rare earth elements damages ecosystems and depletes natural resources. 🌊 Carbon and water impacts—The production of a single laptop emits 300kg of CO2 and uses 190,000 liters of water. What can we do? By choosing refurbished tech, we: 🔄 Extend the life of devices, keeping them out of landfills. 💰 Save money while getting high-quality, reliable products. 🌍 Reduce the demand for resource-intensive manufacturing, saving water, energy, and reducing emissions.
