Day of Seafarers is annually commemorated every 25th of June by the maritime community, to recognise the contribution that seafarers make to our everyday lives. The role of seafarers often goes underappreciated within the maritime industry and by the general public. Seafarers are an essential component in world trade, keeping the economy moving and delivering the goods and fuels we use every day. They are professionals who operate and maintain cargo vessels and other types of ships. They are generally responsible for the safety and security of their shipmates and the cargo they have on board. They also manage all aspects of a ship's maintenance and repairs, which can be anything from minor fixes to major overhauls. Due to the nature of their work, seafarers are often away from home for long period, and have unfortunately been subjected to poor labour treatment and training. The Day of the Seafarer was established in a resolution adopted by the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila to adopt the revised International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers Convention (STCW Convention). Its stated purpose is to recognize the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole. The resolution "encourages government, shipping organizations, companies, shipowners and all other parties concerned to duly and appropriately promote the Day of the Seafarer and take action to celebrate it meaningfully". #IMO #seafarers #maritime

SEAFARERS,🚢 The Backbone and “Unsung Heroes”👏 of global trade,🌎 often face mistreatment;🚫 - Despite their vital role, they face poor working conditions, limited healthcare, and human rights violations. (Among other challenges they bravely face.)⚓ The UN and the IMO must act;👊 - They should work with Sri Lanka, a signatory to the MLC, to enforce the Maritime Labor Convention, ensuring SEAFARERS'🚢 rights are protected.🤝 The MLC guarantees repatriation rights for SEAFARERS;🚢 - The detention of the Express Pearl's captain for three years in Sri Lanka violates this fundamental right.❌ The ITF have been fighting for the captain's release;💪 - The situation highlights the need for better treatment of SEAFARERS🚢 worldwide. It's time for global progression, and not regression.🤪 - We must treat all human beings with dignity and respect.🫡 - Because after all, all human lives matters and we are all humans.💃🏻🕺🏻

It is the Day of the Seafarer today. A day internationally recognized to honor the invaluable contributions of seafarers to global trade and economies. While it is a day of celebration, it's an opportunity to highlight challenges: Shore Leave: The joy of setting foot on land is a rare privilege for many seafarers. Stringent port regulations and tight turnaround times often restrict their ability to enjoy well-deserved shore leave, impacting their well-being and mental health. Dignity in Travel: Seamless travel across airports is a dream. Quite often, seafarers are the ones who are asked "can you step aside, sir" by the immigration and whose bags are opened by the customs. Dignity in Ports: Instances of harassment in ports remain troublingly common. This not only affects their personal experiences but also taints the perception of the maritime industry and the country. Customs coming with a shopping list! PSCOs threatening detention! Port Authorities threatening delays. Criminalization: Seafarers risk of being unjustly criminalized for maritime incidents beyond their control. This is a grim reality that many seafarers face in unfamiliar jurisdictions. While we celebrate The Day, let's also push for tangible changes. The accountability mechanisms in our industry is currently geared to foster mistrust. We need policies that truly support seafarers rights, enhances dignity and develops trust. #DayOfTheSeafarer #Maritime #SeafarerRights

🌊 Ensuring the Safety and Fair Treatment of #Seafarers: A Collective Commitment by ASA SC 🌏 On 10 December 2024, the Asian Shipowners' Association (ASA) Seafarers Committee (SC) convened virtually for its 30th Interim Meeting, hosted by the @China Shipowners’ Association . The discussions highlighted critical issues facing our global seafarers, whose tireless work keeps the world’s trade flowing smoothly. 🔹 Protecting Seafarers Amid Growing Threats The Red Sea, a key waterway linking Europe and Asia, has seen a rise in piracy and attacks on merchant ships. These threats endanger the lives of seafarers—many of whom hail from Asia—and disrupt global trade. The ASA SC condemns such acts and urges the international community to take swift action to safeguard seafarers and civilian merchant vessels. 🔹 Fair Treatment in Alleged Maritime Crimes Seafarers face unfair treatment when detained on suspicion of maritime crimes, harming both their rights and the shipping industry's reputation. ASA SC welcomed the recent adoption of the Guidelines on Fair Treatment of Seafarers Detained in Connection with Alleged Crimes at the Joint ILO/IMO Tripartite Working Group meeting in November 2024. These guidelines aim to: Recognize the human rights and legitimate interests of detained seafarers. Ensure fair treatment by public authorities. Limit the duration of detention to what is strictly necessary, in accordance with relevant laws. 🔹 Strengthening Cooperation and Accountability ASA SC calls for enhanced cooperation between flag states, port states, and the home countries of seafarers. Authorities must adhere to these guidelines and treat seafarers with respect and dignity at all times. 💡 Seafarers are the backbone of global trade, and their welfare is a shared responsibility. The ASA SC remains steadfast in its mission to champion seafarers' rights, welfare, and professional development. 📢 Let’s work together to build a safer and fairer world for our seafarers! 🌏 #SeafarersFirst #FairTreatment #GlobalShipping #ASA #MaritimeSafety #SeafarersRights
