Engaging student is one important focus during the piano lessons I teach. Here are three key points (C.A.T) which I adhere to : 1) Choose music pieces of student’s interests. Take time to listen to different styles with student. A short discussion on what are the elements which contribute to the styles. 2) Affirm every little achievement. Verbal affirmation surely is a welcoming positive note to boost morale. An episode of my student unfamilair with almost the entire piece but she persevered to play to the end. Her persistent efforts deserved an affirmation, despite the fact that she could play better if she had practised throughout the week. In another occasion, a student played some keys in a phrase which harmonize, but the keys were inaccurate according to the music score. The student was glad he was praised for the musical improvisation and continued sorting out the accurate keys. 3) Take time to go through a piece during lesson, so that student could go home with the possibility to play their music with enjoyment. When student goes home with a too difficult piece, it can be quite discouraging and overwhelming, thus ended up with procrastinated practice. *Video shows a student playing the short piece of his choice after a few practices. He was given encouragement prior to this when he could manage to play single hand. #teachingpianomusic #exploremusic #affirmativeapproach #practisetogether #nurturemusicinterest #positivenote

Neurotypical children typically find it easy to differentiate between the C and D on the musical staff, and we may assume that most can do so without difficulty. However, research suggests that some students with dyslexia may have trouble distinguishing musical notes on sheet music. When students with dyslexia first begin piano lessons, they may become discouraged by the challenges of reading notes. In response to this challenge, we shifted from traditional note reading to rote learning using auditory cues to enhance confidence and enjoyment. While note reading remains a crucial skill, our emphasis is on creating a sensorial and holistic learning experience. And in this video, I tried reducing the amount of visual information by covering extra input, and focusing on what is important using a highlight strip. #musicforeveryone #dyslexia #musicallearning #inclusionsg #inclusivemusic #inclusiveeducation #neurodivergent #sgparents #musicteaching #musictherapy #conbriomusictherapy

🎶 Creating a Positive Musical Environment for Your Child 🎶 Did you know that the right musical environment can spark a lifelong love of music in your child? Whether they’re just starting or have been exploring sounds for a while, here are some simple tips to foster a fun and encouraging space for them to grow: 🎵 Play Music Daily: Exposing children to various genres and styles helps them appreciate music’s diversity and discover what they enjoy! 🎹 Encourage Creativity: Let them experiment! Whether it’s banging on a drum or exploring the keys of a piano, every sound they make builds confidence. 👂 Listen Actively: Engage with the music together. Ask them questions like, “How does this song make you feel?” or “What instruments do you hear?” 🪄 Keep It Positive: Celebrate small achievements and let them know that learning music is all about fun and progress, not perfection. In my Little Mozart’s Program, I focus on creating an inspiring, joyful atmosphere where your little one can build a strong foundation for their musical journey. 🎶 🌟 Let’s inspire the next generation of musicians! 🌟

These are the 3 best pieces of advice I've received in my life so far: 1. "Worry about what you can control, not what you can't control" - thanks to my best friend 2. "You don't become a great player overnight nor do you become a bad player overnight. Judge yourself over a long period of time" - thanks to my high school music teacher 3. "Reality is Negotiable" - thanks to Tim Ferriss and Vinh Giang --- What's the best piece of advice you've received in your life to date?

As a leader of developing musicians and music teachers, it's important to me that I spend time refining my own musical skills. Sure, I'm confident in my core abilities, but if I'm not pushing myself to improve, how can I expect to understand what my students are experiencing when I ask them to make break throughs? I remember what it was like to struggle against a goal, not because it happened years ago, but because it happens nearly every day. The trick is learning to enjoy the journey. Teachers: pick up a copy of my practice journal here (https://shorturl.at/lx137) to reignite your practice and revisit the joy of incremental progress.

Playing by ear can be a tricky skill to master, especially when you're first starting out. The challenge lies in identifying the right notes and chords purely by listening, without relying on sheet music or tabs. However, with constant practice, your ear becomes more attuned, and you start to pick up on the nuances of the music. Over time, what once seemed impossible becomes second nature. Even though my voice isn't the best😂😂😂😂😂, I always try to sing along when teaching. Singing helps reinforce the melodies and rhythms, making it easier for my students to connect what they hear with what they play. It's not about having a perfect voice; it's about using every tool at your disposal to help others develop their musical ear. With dedication and patience, anyone can learn to play by ear.

Why dissociate music education and the arts from K-12 curriculum? Part 1- My 4-part expanded list of K-12 academic subjects entitled, "Children's musicals are indeed a powerful educational tool that integrate multiple subjects and develops various skills.", is a curriculum outline of skills and contents students must know to get ready for the real world after their school years. I do not understand how curriculum writers could have arrived at a consensus to do away with music and the arts in a systematic way. It was done intentionally because the resources that were accessible until. as recently as, 2013, have faded away like an oasis turning into a deserted place, replaced by sands and dunes: nothingness.
