“Beta, I’ve been selling diyas here since 2000. Uss samay waqt hi alag tha. People would come to buy diyas, rangolis, and torans. They’d plan to get two things, but end up buying four. You could see the sparkle in everyone’s eyes—it shone brighter than the diyas. Even before Diwali arrived, you could feel it in the air. Back then, we used to sell sacks of rangoli within days. Now, selling just ten packets feels impossible.” “Why is that?” “Inflation. Nowadays, people come just two days before Diwali, pick up a diya, and say, ‘Itna mehenga? Pichle saal toh nahi tha. Hum toh online hi manga lenge.’ They sit at home, place their orders, and everything gets delivered to their doorstep. They’re happy. The online vendors are happy. But what about us? Months of hard work—coordinating materials, painting diyas, setting up the stall—feels wasted. Par chhorro yeh sab ko. Aaj thoda bura din, toh kal wapis acha bhi ayega. Diwali is incomplete without soan papdi; but did you know the intricate work that goes into crafting this seemingly humble sweet? First ingredients are added to a kadai and slow-heated to form a thick, gooey caramel. Once it cools down, the makers sit in a circle and stretch the caramel gently to form its signature stringy, thread-like texture. Next, a mixture of besan, flour and cardamom powder is added to it. The mix is once again stretched using small wooden sticks. Slowly, the soan papdi’s thread-like consistency takes shape - almost like sweet hay. Next, this is layered in a flat tray, cooled and then cut it into small cubes -- that we see and eat on Diwali every year! Even chef Vikas Khanna wrote, "Though I’ve trained and cooked a lot in Indian sweets for decades, I’m always amazed & inspired by the brilliance of Soan Papdi. There is nothing so technical, complex & luxurious as this sweet. Ever. He called it 'sweet threads of heaven' and saluted the artists/halwais/chefs behind it. Interestingly, an engineer's brilliant idea is helping prevent the wastage of Soan Papdi every Diwali. Milind Shah from Kolkata founded ‘Gauraa’ to address the problem of massive wastage in the FMCG sector by selling dented, near-expiry and slightly damaged products at discounted prices. His idea helped #Haldiram sell the entire stock of #SoanPapdi leftover post the #Diwali season -- that no major retailers were ready to take -- in just a few days! Following a successful Diwali season, which begins on Dev Uth Ekadashi, November 12, and runs through December 16, Indian traders around the country are prepared for a significant business spike in the forthcoming wedding season. A recent study by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) estimates that 48 lakh weddings will produce roughly ₹6 lakh crore in retail sales, including products and services. Compared to last year's 35 lakh marriages, which generated ₹4.25 lakh billion, this year's season shows substantial growth, mainly due to an increase in auspicious wedding dates.
