Is Europe truly lagging in innovation and AI? This perspective, while common, can be misleading. Recognising structural and ecosystem dependencies is certainly critical, but not enough. I think that the challenge for Europe is broader: it's about rethinking the role of technology in driving economic growth and social well-being. My short pamphlet delves into the history of innovation in Europe over the past decades, examining how the EU has dealt with it. I also sketch out some ideas for innovation that transcend both the typical arms race narrative and the GenAI excitement, to embrace a holistic view of the positive role technology could take reshape Europe's future. A recent study by PwC and the DataScienceGroup reveals a concerning trend: while the US and China race ahead in AI adoption, Germany—and Europe as a whole—is falling behind. This gap isn’t just about #technology; it’s a challenge to our competitiveness and our ability to shape the future of global #innovation. But catching up requires more than installing new tools—it’s about fostering collaboration between businesses and technology to create real value. French AI summit to focus on environmental impact of energy-hungry tech. The event will push for greater transparency and aims to rank AI firms in terms of ability to meet climate goals. Rating artificial intelligence companies in terms of their ecological impact is among the proposals under consideration, while other areas being looked at include the effect on the labour market, giving all countries access to the technology, and bringing more states under the wing of global AI governance initiatives. https://zurl.co/TNJQ

Today is the UN’s first AI Governance Day! Representatives across industry, academia, civil society, and UN agencies, from over 70 countries, will convene in Geneva today to officially kick off the AI for Good Global Summit 2024. The KT4D project sees this event as an excellent opportunity to discuss #Democracy and #AI with diverse global speakers from #public and #private sectors exploring how democracy is evolving with new #Technologies. The event will feature many European representatives, emphasising Europe's pioneering AI Act and its impact on democracy, as discussed in KT4D's policy brief and article series on AI and democracy.
