November 25th is "#InternationalDay for the Elimination of Violence against Women." [Yesterday started] the 16 day countdown from one day about human rights to another. December 10th is "International #HumanRights Day." I've written extensively about my thoughts on “special” days—how they can be very performative, but no less important to acknowledge.
Global days are meant to spread awareness and they make me painfully aware of the gap between funding, the comms around “the good”, and actually investing in change. Seeing the UN posts and other orgs make it difficult to ignore the pandering required to get people to give a $hit.
Truly, the head of the UN has to beg for $ to fund their operating budget and meet their aid goals.
And, the U.S. is the primary funder of UN HQ. The paltry humanitarian aid we give annually $43-50 Billion GLOBALLY is a drop in the bucket, especially considering the harm and human rights violations we're party to, domestically as well as abroad. Simultaneously the Feds spend 30x (THIRTY times) that on weapons and military aid.
The numbers don’t lie, even when the U.S. govt does right to our faces.
They want you to believe they “only spend” $750-850 Billion USD on the defense budget. One study estimated the actual spending is about double that, aka $1.5 Trillion USD, and counting.
Why talk about military aid on a day when we're supposed to be talking about GBV and ending violence against women and girls? Because these numbers don't lie either.
1 in 3 women globally experience some form of violence
⏱️ Every 10 Minutes a woman is killed by a partner or family member.
Home is the most dangerous place for women.
85,000 women killed by men in 2023; 60% by a partner or family member
70% of women in a humanitarian crises experience violence
80% of those impacted by climate change are women and girls, but the majority of Big Tech, Big Oil, Big Banks, and Big Philanthropy are led by men.
Orgs supporting women and girls receive only 1.6% of ALL philanthropic dollars–less than orgs that focus on animals or the climate.
If that isn't violent, I don't know what is.
Ending gender based violence first and foremost MUST be intersectional. The U.N. does not include trans, non-binary or gender nonconforming in ANY of their comms, policies, charters, or special days. Any marginalized gender, which is to say those who identify as something other than a cis-man deserve to be safe from violence.
The first End Violence against women day was marked in Beijing a quarter of a century ago…when Hillary Clinton famously said “Human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights.” A 2024 report noted ~zero progress was made in the past 25 years towards gender equality.
Given the majority of the violence is coming from one gender, I suggest we call it "International Day to End Patriarchal Violence and Gender Oppression."
Maybe then we will actually see some #change.
