The people team at Gusto delivered an incredible panel at the #ALPFA convention. Here's some of the key learnings I got from the panel: - Think two jobs ahead. Thinking one job ahead may take you to wrong decisions with short term gains instead of long-term goals. (Emil Yeargin) - Know where you want to be, be flexible on how you get there. (Nerissa I.) - Figure out what you don't want in your career, make decisions based on those non-negotiables. It's sometimes easier that knowing exactly what you want. (Monique Jackson, MBA) - Be careful not to tie your personal value to the company you work in. Jobs change, companies shift priorities or shut down. You can't let that define you. (Santhiago DeVicente) - It's fine not to know the exact thing you want but have a north star. (Dakotah Vayle Eddy, MBA) #development #leadership #careeradvice #alpfamiliar #alpfacon24 #ALPFAconvention24 #ALPFA
Last week, we had the privilege to share some of our personal stories and learnings with early career professionals in the Latin Community, a community that holds a special place in my and Gusto's hearts. I feel proud of where I'm from and where I work. Thank you, Gusto and ALPFA Inc - Association of Latino Professionals For America, for the opportunity; I feel grateful. Emil Yeargin Nerissa I. Lucky 7! I'm probably due for a post, so here's 7 things that have made me feel pretty lucky in the last 7 years... 1. Invaluable exposure. I have a front-row seat to watch business leaders of all ages and maturity levels as they approach the same question: how can we solve this business problem with software? 2. Having chances to learn from mistakes. I am not the same professional I was 7 years ago! 3. Having advocates in leadership that have mentored me to a seat at the leadership table. 4. Getting to spend a lot of time at the Denver office! Shoutout to Catalyst. 5. The financial stability and work-life balance to have creative hobbies. 6. Finding a passion in age-tech and being supported by ForytAU to organize a pitch competition. 7. Having a license to build my network. I've made some great friends along the way. Once upon a time, a dear friend, who was much older and smarter, said to a much younger me, who was lamenting the difficulties of adulting: "you have the hardware, you just need the software!" Isn't the universe cheeky?
Caroline McGowan has had quite the career since studying Philosophy at Portland State University and probably never dreamt she'd be leading the charge for our sales team! Caroline is often the first face that people see when they get introduced to FortyAU. She has transformed into a strategic thinker with a bright smile, she dives into difficult problems with both empathy and tenacity. A talented artist, she puts her creativity to work for her clients and always working to get them the best deal possible. Thank you for all your hard work and congratulations on your work anniversary! 🎉

When you love who you work with… Every day feels more fulfilling Every task seems more manageable And every goal appears more achievable. It’s not just about having fun, it’s about celebrating together. Celebrations bind us, reminding us that our efforts have meaning beyond the bottom line. They reinforce our connections and energize us to push forward, together. So, take a moment to look around at your team. These are the people who battle alongside you in the trenches, who share in your struggles, and who cheer on your victories. And remember, celebrating doesn’t require a fancy gala or big party. Small acknowledgments can have a big impact. A spontaneous lunch, a team shout-out in a meeting, or a simple thank-you note can uplift spirits and strengthen bonds. Do what works for you, but most importantly, remember: Celebrate every win, big or small.
