A job search can be like sourdough - not as easy as it seems. I once thought it was a breeze, just like baking sourdough. However, I've realized it's a complex process. While I've mastered sourdough baking, finding a job has been a different journey. In a market with limited upper-level HR positions and fierce competition, I've decided to reset. For me, this means revisiting the basics, exploring impactful roles as an individual contributor that may offer lower pay. Resetting may vary for each of us, but it's worth considering if your job search is taking longer than expected. Recruitment is a lot like preparing a roast dinner. 🍽️ Every ingredient needs to be carefully selected and perfectly timed for everything to come together seamlessly. Here’s how I see it: The Meat (Main Role): The centerpiece of the meal, just like the key role you're recruiting for. It’s the foundation of everything else, and without it, the dinner wouldn't be complete. Choose wisely! The Veggies (Supporting Roles): Essential sides that bring balance to the plate. Just like team members, they complement and enhance the main role, ensuring the whole organization functions beautifully. The Gravy (Company Culture): The glue that holds everything together. Without a good culture, things can seem dry and disconnected. A little goes a long way, but it’s a vital part of the overall experience. The Roast Potatoes (Benefits & Perks): Everyone’s favorite! It’s what candidates often look forward to when considering an offer—crispy, satisfying, and worth staying for. The Timing (Hiring Process): Get it wrong, and things are either undercooked or burnt out. A smooth, well-paced process ensures that all the pieces come together just in time for a successful placement. Recruitment is an art and science, just like cooking the perfect roast dinner. When hiring… think organizing a potluck, NOT assigning dishes Assigning dishes is like having job descriptions & expecting a match This mindset ≈ focus on finding the “perfect candidate” - It’s easy to forget compromise & miss what a candidate may be able to offer - Not everyone can "buy" perfection (i.e., paying a premium/top-of-market) Hosting a potluck is more puzzling together a delicious, family meal You're evaluating potential candidates AND existing team - Reflecting on overall opportunities & gaps - If you complain about how hard it is to find talent; remember, this means you should try to hold onto talent, whenever & wherever you do find it!
