Last week a friend asked me if I still thought web3 had a future. Tough question, but fair — AI is the hot thing and we’re still waiting for the next bull cycle to really take off. It felt like a cosmic nudge to remind myself why I’m optimistic. For me, it all boils down to the economic advantage of protocol networks. Yes, there are a ton of morally strong reasons why decentralization is better for humanity — but that’s the reason I like web3, not the reason I think it can succeed. The unfair advantage of protocol networks is that they don’t need a middleman — the protocol regulates exchange and theoretically only needs to generate enough funds to maintain itself. Over the long run, a protocol ride share network should be able to charge significantly lower rates than Uber or Lyft. It’s obviously not a given — pricing is only part of the equation for a new modern-day network. But it’s the reason why I think web3 still has a chance to be a foundational part of the internet. Web3 is the next evolution of the internet, characterized by #decentralization, #transparency, and #userempowerment. 🔹 Unlike Web2, where power is concentrated in the hands of a few big players (platform providers), Web3 puts control back into the hands of users 💪 🔄 How does it differ from Web2? In Web2, your Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook etc, they all store and have access to your login credentials, data associated with your account, statistics of what you do in their platform, what you comment, what you like, THEY KNOW WHO YOU ARE, they read you as a children book. 🔹 Big uncles from Web2 companies can erase you from the platform at any time if they wish. 🔹 They got the power of deciding what to do with your account and your internet identity, not you. If they wish, they can ban you forever, and your internet identity is no longer existent. Great for cancel culture activities 🤓 🔹 Conversely, in Web3 even if some big uncle wants to ban you to death, they can do nothing about your online identity, nobody has power over your identity but YOU yourself. 🔹 If you have your online presence registered on decentralized platforms, nobody can ever ban, restrict or control your online identity. It is just designed this way. 🔹 There are no CEOs and Zuckerbergs who can decide to do something with your account/wallet/assets/identity. 🔹 That's why Web3 revolves around the idea of SELF-CUSTODY, meaning that you are the ONLY one responsible for the custody of your identity/asset ownership. Very inconvenient for cancel culture 😫 💡 The potential of Web3 The potential of Web3 is immense. From decentralized finance (DeFi) to digital ownership of assets, it's paving the way for a more transparent, secure, and inclusive internet. Empowering Early Adopters of Web3 Technology Between 1994 and the early 2000s the world wide web allowed users to consume static content and browse web pages. By the mid-2000s, Web2 was allowing users to interact with those web pages, changing the way the web behaved and the information that was displayed on it.
