In Harvard University’s Executive Education for Sustainability Leadership program, one of the central tenets we explored was a deceptively hard truth: Change leaders can’t effectively support the work of sustainability if they themselves are living lives out of balance, constantly drawing from depleted resources without replenishing and regenerating themselves along the way. It’s such a simple, straightforward idea but whenever I talk to someone in ESG or sustainability, we share the same sentiment. It feels virtually impossible to lead a balanced life within our current business contexts. At times it feels hard to even imagine a world where a change leader can do their work guiding and supporting systems change without sacrificing themselves in the process. I’ve wrestled with that tension myself at times. It’s always a work in progress and that drive to find a sustainable way has pushed me to be on the lookout for leaders and programs that equip change leaders to go the distance. That’s where Novalda comes in. A Center of Excellence for change leader development, this past year the incredible Kerry Woodcock offered a first-of-it’s-kind leadership development program called: Soul Sala. From the name alone, I thought that this might not be your usual leadership program with a retreat component. It’s participants are whisked off to the beautiful Spanish coastline of Costa Brava, for example. ☀️ We did all the learning you’d expect: new tools and lots of necessary but uncomfortable growth to unlock new capabilities. But the innovation and magic was in how we did it. The experience top to bottom fully nourished us at all levels. I met new lifelong friends and colleagues: a support system for life. I rested, ate well, created art and connected with nature and the environment in ways I hadn’t had access to before. My soul and spirit were energized and uplifted, and I developed new practices for creating balance as part of the process of change itself. And in those very important ways, my ability to lead change over a long term was meaningfully strengthened. I became a Sustainability leader with a sustainable practice. 💫 I can’t recommend Soul Sala enough, and am so grateful to have had the experience with Kerry and my cohort, Jillian Millar Drysdale, Greg Veltman and Camilla Bildsten. I learned so much from each of you, and am in awe of your strengths and stories. This program is essential for a change leader that is seeking a training experience that is fresh and new, and might benefit from a bit of a soul tune-up as well. 😉 If you have questions about joining the next session of this special program, feel free to shoot me a DM. In these times, as South Africa teeters on the brink of a leadership crisis with trust in our institutions at an all-time low, the call for responsible leadership has never been louder. The Institute of Justice and Reconciliation’s report from December 2023 starkly highlights this, with a disheartening 80% of citizens doubting the integrity of our political leaders. Against this backdrop, the Manifesto for Responsible Leadership for a Better World, spearheaded by the Centre for Responsible Leadership Studies at Stellenbosch Business School, under the guidance of Prof Mias de Klerk, emerges not just as a beacon of hope but as a clarion call for action. Having had the privilege of Prof Mias De Klerk as my supervisor during my MBA at the Stellenbosch Business School, I've witnessed firsthand the depth of his commitment to fostering leadership that transcends traditional boundaries. His vision for a world where leaders are judged not solely by their achievements but by their impact on society and the environment is both inspiring and urgent. The manifesto challenges leaders across all spheres to reassess their values and actions, urging a shift towards leadership that serves the greater good, that values integrity, accountability, and the well-being of all stakeholders, including those not present at the decision-making table. As South Africa faces pivotal elections, the message of the manifesto is clear: the path to economic and social stability lies through responsible leadership. It's time for leaders in business, government, civil society, and the media to embrace this transformative perspective, to be evaluated against these principles publicly, and to act with the courage and integrity our country desperately needs. In the spirit of the manifesto and guided by Prof De Klerk's leadership, I am committed to embodying these principles in my professional journey with Pindulo.
