When I read a book that educates and inspires business success, I have to share it with other people. Today, that book is by Brett Townsend and Tim Hoskins and is called, “Insights on the Brink: Revitalizing the Market Research and Analytics Industry.” The struggle it addresses is summarized with this quote: “Consumer insights is, almost without exception, classified as nonworking dollars, meaning that we’re considered a cost center instead of a revenue-generating part of the business. So from the get-go, we’re fighting an uphill battle to prove our value.” Many of the concepts resonated deeply with my real-world experience, deeply held beliefs, and lifelong passion. Research insights, analytics, and collaboration are the foundation for driving business impact. We hold the key to unlocking opportunities for change, growth, and transformation—yet we often resist the changes needed to fully unleash that potential. Insights on the Brink challenges the traditional mindsets and practices of our industry, urging us to rethink how we approach our work. Want prospects to actually read your case studies? Forget fluff and vanity metrics — give readers something they can take and use tomorrow. Stop trying to impress readers and start inspiring action. Here's what's worked for me: 1. Lead with a compelling "before" Pain points are opportunities to connect with readers. Use the before section to draw them in: - The challenge: What obstacles did the client face? - The stakes: Why did it matter? What would have happened if they didn't act? When readers see their own struggles, you've got their attention. 2. Make the solution relatable Case studies aren't just product plugs. Readers want to see how your clients got there. Structure your solution section like this: - The process: What was done step by step? Break it down like a mini roadmap. - The why: Why did this specific approach work? Actually provide insights prospects can use so they feel like you're guiding them toward results, not products. 3. Don't stop at results — offer next steps Many case studies wrap up with numbers and call it a day. But the real magic comes when you frame the takeaway so it's meaningful for the reader. - Encourage action: Suggest a small, actionable step the reader can try today. - New perspective: Have readers reflect how they can get the same results in their business.
