[Blog] 30 Years of Freedom - Valuing the role of women in society and the workplace by Simangazo Mokale   Women are an integral part of communities and they are the foundation of society, therefore investing in them to accelerate progress is vital.   Just 30 years ago most women in South Africa were denied the right to vote and work. Many of the basic rights that we now take for granted were also denied to the majority of the people of this country. Many of the challenges faced by women prior to our democratic change in 1994, continue to impact women around the world today. Vast numbers of women have no voice or just simply continue to suffer in silence.   Our own journey has taught us that the voices of women are powerful and can never be silenced. As women it remains our responsibility to continue to write new chapters in our history, and to challenge outdated views and to smash glass ceilings. Since 1994, women have assumed leadership roles in all sectors of society, but more work still remains in closing the gender gap and ensuring women take their rightful place in all sectors of society.   The recently concluded annual celebration of International Women’s Day was a reminder of the many milestones women have achieved over the years. The call from the First Lady and other advocates for increased investment in women underscores the persistent need for gender equality and women's empowerment initiatives. The plea to implement the 35 per cent affirmative action as per the National Gender Policy highlights the importance of increasing the percentage of women in decision making positions. Such advocacy reflects a broader recognition of the importance of creating enabling environments for women to thrive in various sectors. In Commemoration of the International Women's Day 2024, which comes up today, women have charged government at all levels to prioritize the involvement of women in politics and decision making. Fresh FM's Adeola Bankole spoke with some media practitioners on the importance of this event, with the theme 'Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress',aimed at tackling economic dis empowerment. International Women's Day 2024 themed, "Invest in women , Accelerate progress" provides a potent platform for bringing attention to the obstacles and injustices that women experience, including limited economic opportunities, gender-based violence, and unequal access to healthcare and education. This is an opportunity to analyze various achievements and accomplishments to renew commitment to finding solutions that can advance gender equality and give women and girls more power. A Broadcast Journalist, Mrs Olutayo Faleti , explained that women's involvement in recent times has increased compared to the past, but urged government to increase women's access to full range of resources in order to increase growth of the nation which is government's priority. A Public Affairs Commentator, Mrs Yemi Alabi, opined that the government should include women in financial decisions and policy making, to have a flourishing economy, as women are better managers of resources. As International Women's Day 2024 highlights the importance of women in nation-building, government at all levels need to increase women's participation in governance by investing more in policies that affect them positively. #internationalwomensday2024
