Yara supplies Cooxupé with Brazil's first batch of lower-carbon fertilizer. Decarbonizing coffee farming in Brazil. The product comes from renewable sources and has up to a 90% lower carbon footprint compared to similar fertilizer produced with fossil-based natural gas. With initiatives to decarbonize agriculture and other industries, Yara, the global leader in crop nutrition, is the first company to offer in the Brazilian market a nitrogen fertilizer produced from a renewable source, with a reduction of up to 90% in its carbon footprint compared to the same fertilizer produced from fossil-based natural gas. The first batch of this product has just been delivered to producers from Cooxupé, one of the world’s leading coffee cooperatives, headquartered in Guaxupé, Minas Gerais. Decarbonizing coffee farming in Brazil. This first delivery marks an important milestone for the #decarbonization of coffee farming in Brazil, with an expected impact of up to a 40% reduction in the carbon footprint of coffee beans. For this phase of the project, a group of producers was selected to represent the more than 20,000 cooperative families of Cooxupé, receiving fertilizers from the Porsgrunn plant in Norway, which arrived via the Port of Santos (SP) last October. “The delivery of solutions towards climate neutrality is a global strategy for Yara and reinforces the potential of the fertilizer sector to contribute to a sustainable food future," says Marcelo Altieri, President of Yara Brazil. "Climate change is shaping the way we must produce food, and this new direction requires a coalition effort between producers, companies, and the industry. The partnership between Yara and Cooxupé is a milestone for Brazil and symbolizes this joint effort, which brings a significant positive impact to nature and society as a whole”. According to the President of Cafés Cooxupé, Carlos Augusto Rodrigues de Melo, the use of lower-carbon #fertilizers aligns with the ESG agenda and the global market and consumer demands regarding a commitment to society and the environment. "Our cooperative is committed to #coffee production based on #sustainability, quality, and #traceability," he says. https://lnkd.in/dtTTBh4P

UP-TO-DATE TECHNOLOGY FOR SUGAR STORAGE Producing white sugar from beets is one of the primary industries in Europe. However, consolidation and optimisation of the production facilities are the main strategies for sugar producers. The focus on production leads to less attention for #storage. As a result, many outdated and inefficient sugar silos are still in operation. #Maintenance issues have become a major concern, while European production volumes increased tenfold compared to the #silo storage capacity. Time to catch up by using the Eurosilo System to secure both operational and strategic advantages. Jacek Kucharski from our Eurosilo agent RICCO International Trade & Consultancy in Poland: “There is a huge potential for the Eurosilo system here because the total silo capacity is about 650 thousand to 750 thousand tonnes, whereas the production soared to 2.5 million tonnes per year. A key issue is the lack of suitable silo technology that reduces the problem of maintenance and meets all requirements, such as the Eurosilo system. Jean-Marie Oheix from LS PROCESS explains: “The main strategy in France, one of the largest regions for producing sugar, is to upgrade or revamp the existing storage facilities. Therefore it is a big advantage that ESI handles Weibull and Spaans silos with conversion, maintenance and upgrade. In case of a replacement, a brand new Eurosilo guarantees the producers 30 years of hassle free, reliable and low maintenance storage.” To help you get a clear understanding of the Eurosilo system and its configuration to meet ATEX and food regulations, care free maintenance and fully controlled conditioning of sugar, we prepared a concise whitepaper. ADI Comprehensive Fertilization Program The distillery effluent, which is customarily regarded as a dire environmental threat due to its high organic load, is presently being used as liquid organic fertilizer for sugarcane. It is a by-product of natural fermentation of molasses to alcohol. After it had undergone natural fermentation, molasses doesn’t lose its content of minerals, macro- and micronutrients, residual sugars and proteins that improve soil conditions and subsequently increase sugarcane yield. Organic in nature, distillery effluent does not contain toxic and hazardous materials otherwise the yeasts used during fermentation process will not survive. ADI is the first distillery to be recognized, duly registered, and licensed by the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA) to use distillery effluent as fertilizer, hence the ADI Comprehensive Fertilization Program. Under the program, farmers have free utilization to the fertilizer delivered to their fields through tanker trucks. Owing to the success of this program, the Biofuels Law (2006) adopted fertilization as the treatment of choice for the other distilleries.

Ethanol producer Green Plains Inc. is gearing up to open a first-of-its-kind facility at a dry corn milling plant in Shenandoah, Iowa, that it claims will be able to produce #dextrose at a commercial scale with significantly lower capital intensity and a 40% reduction in carbon footprint vs the standard wet milling process. The facility is mechanically complete and in the commissioning phase, with shipments to customers beginning in the second quarter of 2024. “We haven’t seen a new wet corn mill in the US for years,” says Green Plains SVP Anand Sundaresan. “It’s just so capital intensive. We have a process [‘clean sugar technology,’ developed by subsidiary Fluid Quip Technologies, LLC] that can produce dextrose with a much lower carbon intensity and a much lower capital intensity. “And we think it’s going to be truly disruptive, both to support the food industry [for bakery, confectionery etc] and for the growing bio-economy [dextrose is used as the primary feedstock for #precisionfermentation].” #foodtech #dextrose #biomanufacturing AgFunder

Sugarcane pricing models differ between the main producing countries Experts explain calculations adopted by Brazil and also provide a global overview. NovaCana - Published: 02 May 2024 - 10:04 Among the largest sugarcane producers in the world, each has its own pricing model, generally following fixed price parameters or based on the value of products, such as sugar or ethanol. These models were the subject of one of the panels at the Cana Summit, an event held by the Organization of Associations of Sugarcane Producers in Brazil (Orplana). In Brazil, the largest cultivator of the grass, the value passed on to suppliers is usually based on calculations by the Council of Sugarcane, Sugar and Ethanol Producers (Consecana), which has offices in states such as São Paulo, Paraná, Pernambuco, Sergipe and Alagoas. The economist at Pecege Consultoria e Projetos, Haroldo Torres, explains that different sugarcane pricing systems in Brazil are based on the Consecana-SP model. However, he points out that there are other regional differences that affect producers' remuneration. In the current revenue sharing model, according to the economist, the supplier receives, on average, 59.5% of the price of sugar and 62.1% of the value of ethanol. “It is as if, in simple terms, the producers were partners in a company that manufactures sugar and ethanol, in a proportion of around 60%, net of freight and taxes”, he summarizes. But Torres also brought a broader view, listing other large sugarcane producers around the world and how their raw material prices are made. Also present on the panel were the agribusiness commercial specialist from S&P Global Commodity Insights, Nicole Monteiro, and the director of Datagro, Guilherme Nastari. They spoke about the importance of ethanol and its co-products and gave examples of pricing formulas that are in force in the market. Secure all your sugar demands for 2024/2025 with us now.
