Vaccines have emerged as a cornerstone of public health, preventing the spread of deadly diseases and saving countless lives. This year, World Health Organization Immunization Week will celebrate 50 years of the WHO’s Expanded Programme on Immunization – recognizing the collective efforts to save and improve countless lives from vaccine-preventable diseases and calling on countries to ramp up investments in immunization initiatives to protect future generations. It is important to recognize how far we have come, but even more important is to be conscious about how much more we can achieve - This is what comes to my mind when I think about vaccines and vaccination. European Immunization Week (EIW) allows us an opportunity to recognize the importance of immunization in preventing diseases and protecting life in the WHO European Region and globally. EIW in 2024 holds special significance as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI). This week (21-27 April 2024), the governments, Ministries of Health, Healthcare professionals, Parents/Caregivers, Communities, Professional Associations and organizations (civil society and community based organizations and, youth) in the WHO European Region are joining hands to celebrate the remarkable achievements of the EPI over the past 5 decades in protecting multiple generations from serious vaccine-preventable illnesses. We still have some distance to travel so that everyone everywhere (in a community and a nation) can reap the benefits of the available and new vaccines. No one entity can do it all by itself, partnership (local and global) is key to this success. Nobody should suffer from an infectious disease for which a safe and effective vaccine is available. Translating a "vaccine" into "vaccination" is a shared responsibility and each one of us can play a role. It was my chance to sit with David Barrett and engage in an interesting discussion on the achievements, challenges around inequitable vaccine access, growing skepticism towards immunization, and the future of global health collaboration. We're excited to share our newest Immunization Profile Study report, which provides a national overview of local health department immunization capacity. Explore the data to learn more about local health department immunization priorities, activities to control vaccine preventable diseases, services conducted to improve vaccine access, and challenges and opportunities associated with strengthening programming. Key findings include: 📊 On average, local health departments have 6 full-time equivalents (FTEs) dedicated to #Immunization services, which equates to one-third of an FTE per 10,000 people served. 📊 Average local health department spending on immunization increased during the #COVID19 pandemic – more than doubling from FY2020 to FY2021 and FY2022. 📊 Eight in 10 local health departments cited #VaccineHesitancy as a challenge to immunization activities – a 46% increase from 2017. Word Immunization Day-2024: Empowering lives, one vaccine at a time! On the occasion of World Immunization Day (2024), the KIIT School of Public Health (KSPH) reiterates its dedication to advancing health equity and enhancing immunization initiatives. Vaccines are essential in protecting communities, alleviating the burden of disease, and fostering a healthier future for all individuals. It is imperative that we raise awareness and strive towards the attainment of universal vaccination coverage.

According to the CDC, world immunization prevents 3-5 million deaths each year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, 67 million children missed vaccines they needed to protect them from disabling and deadly diseases. The pandemic and other recent emerging health threats made it clear that safe and effective vaccines, improved vaccination access and acceptance, and strong immunization programs are crucial to protect health, wellness, safety, and security in the United States and around the world.
