There's a reason that Noah Lyles won the 100M race in the Olympics. He planned for it... I thought of how his strategy and commitment to winning related to the race for winning as an executive leader. Then there was this quote: "The tightness of this race showed more than ever how crucial a good finish is, and how important it is to get the torso over the line before anything else, because for Noah Lyles, that vital dip at the line is what got him Olympic gold." Similarly, the details of how you prepare for and mitigate human risk in your organization is everything. Your torso could be leaning over, made all the more powerful because you know your company is in alignment. But, you have to want to win. And to win, you have to know the human risk involved. The risk that comes with silent employees not raising the alarm to anything that might be out of alignment. Noah Lyles was in alignment. Michael Jordan is one of the premier sportspeople for motivational quotes. His track record in delivery in his sport is peerless, so when he speaks we should see how we can relate it to our world; and it is a great one today! As #businessleaders we frequently get presented with obstacles both internal and external, it is why we build capability within our organisations. How we utilise challenge to our advantage is something we have shared a lot this month; sports and challenge go hand in hand. Every obstacle is different and often created in different ways and contexts. And as MJ is sharing today, they might come out of the blue and hit us, at that point we stop and think how do we overcome it? As #salesleaders we try and move quickly to deal with any obstacle we face, either from customers or competitors. The more closely our team is aligned and engaged then the faster we start presenting solutions to consider; this is can be the most exciting part of any deal, as often life is far from plain sailing. "𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭" At a recent leadership conference, I had the pleasure of listening to James Michael Lafferty, Olympic Coach & Corporate Leader . He spoke about what sets "𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬" apart from "𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬"!! Amongst the several golden nuggets of wisdom that James shared, what stuck with me is the example of the legendary 𝑬𝒅𝒘𝒊𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒔𝒆𝒔, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑶𝒍𝒚𝒎𝒑𝒊𝒄 𝑯𝒖𝒓𝒅𝒍𝒆𝒓 and it prompted me to research more about Edwin. In today's VUCA and BANI world, we constantly seek inspiration and guidance from exemplary figures who embody dedication, resilience, and excellence. Edwin's journey offers profound lessons that are incredibly relevant. 1. 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒚 Edwin Moses' remarkable winning streak of 122 consecutive races over nearly a decade is a testament to his unwavering discipline and consistency. In our industry, maintaining high standards and delivering exceptional service consistently are key to earning our customers' trust and loyalty. 2. Hero To Zero In 2020, Gareth Southgate brought England to the European Championship final. While they didn't win, Southgate was hailed as a hero for getting England to its first final in a long long time. For a while, there were books and articles written about the England manager's great leadership. I remember also seeing a number of posts on LinkedIn talking about "the secrets" of Southgate's success. At that time, it seemed like he is the greatest British leader since Winston Churchill. Then England didn't do so well after that. Suddenly, from a great leader, he became an average football manager. No longer was his name mentioned in the same breath with "great leadership". Then guess what? After England's uninspiring draw with Denmark last night, Southgate is now called the "worst football manager in the world" by some. It is interesting to see how quickly opinions change in 4 years even though his management style didn't change. (At least as far as I could tell.) Many people judge someone's leadership ability simply based on short term results. Win today, you are the best. Lose tomorrow, you are worse than a piece of... fertilizer. It goes to show those people never really understand what good leadership looks like. (Don't get me wrong. Result is an important KPI. Punctuality is more than just showing up on time – it's about being early enough to make a real impact. That's why I advocate setting your clock a few minutes minutes ahead.   Having back-to-back meetings might seem like a badge of honor, but it's crucial to recognize that effectiveness can dwindle without proper preparation and focus. Reflecting on my own journey, I decided to delve into golf in 2016, albeit as a beginner. Despite my novice status, my golf coach imparted a profound life and business lesson that resonates with me to this day. That’s my story video today.   For those familiar with Lombardi time, my experience will strike a chord. Vince Lombardi, the legendary football coach known for his championship-winning strategies, instilled in his players the importance of arriving at least 15 minutes early to practice. Anything less was considered tardy in Lombardi's eyes. He understood that mere punctuality wasn't sufficient.  This philosophy, dubbed Lombardi Time, has enduring significance. To honor this ethos, on July 20, 2012, a clock overlooking Lombardi Avenue at Lambeau Field, the home of the Green Bay Packers and where Lombardi left an indelible mark, was set 15 minutes ahead of the actual time.
