🚀 Exciting News! 🚀 I’m thrilled to share that my recent paper has been published in OnePetro as part of the ADIPEC 2024 Conference proceedings! 🔍 Paper Title: The Effects of Gas Type and Rock Heterogeneity on Residual Trapping in Carbonate Samples: A Pore Scale Experimental Study In this study, we delved into the complex pore-level physics governing fluid flow in carbonate rocks, with a focus on the influence of key parameters such as gas type, rock heterogeneity, and micro-porosity. Using advanced techniques including core flooding with micro-CT imaging, we were able to shed light on how micro-porosity impacts fluid distribution and gas trapping during displacement processes. Key Highlights: • Demonstrated the significant role of micro-porosity in fluid saturation. • Revealed how different gas types (nitrogen vs. methane) affect fluid saturation and recovery factors. • Developed a more accurate methodology for measuring residual gas saturation in carbonates, essential for improving reservoir performance predictions. This research is a step forward in enhancing our understanding of trapping mechanisms and fluid dynamics at the pore scale, with important implications for more accurate reservoir modeling and improved recovery strategies. Publication alert 📢 🔔 😀 Our latest open-access article 'Investigating supercritical flow characteristics and movement of sediment particles in a narrow channel bend using PTV and video footage' related to sediment bypass tunnel research is now available in the journal 'Advances in Water Resources', Elsevier. Access it via https://lnkd.in/dajyJ2bc This novel experimental investigation advances the knowledge of turbulence characteristics, secondary currents, and sediment movement under supercritical flows in narrow channel bends and identifies the cause of nonuniform invert abrasion at sediment bypass tunnel bends - very useful in the design of these hydraulic structures that are used in mitigating reservoir sedimentation. It also produces experimental data to validate future numerical models dealing with the hydrodynamics of supercritical bend flows. The research was carried out through a successful cooperation among Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Luleå University of Technology, Vattenfall AB, Technical University of Munich, ETH Zürich, and HydroCen (Norwegian Research Centre for Hydropower Technology) with great contributions from my supervisors and co-authors, Dr. Sofia Larsson, Dr. Mats Billstein, Prof. Nils Rüther, Prof. Leif Lia, and Dr. Elena Pummer. I’m thrilled to announce that our research on “Sandstone Wettability and Mixed Gas Composition: Unraveling the Impact of CO2 in Hydrogen Geo-storage” has been published in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy! This papar is the first publication that I got out of my MSc study under the supervision of Dr. Jalal Fahimpour and Dr. Mohammad Sharifi. Our investigation involved measuring the advancing and receding contact angles of H2/CO2 in contact with brine on a sandstone mineral under different pressures and temperatures using the tilted plate method, which is the technique we used to study the wettability hysteresis phenomenon. The chemical and physical structure of the rock is unaffected by CO2, as demonstrated by the lack of wettability change with varying CO2 fraction after analysis using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). 🔊 📣 paper alert 📣 🔊 The chapter of my thesis on buoyant hydraulic fractures interacting with changes in material properties has become an upgrade 📝 📈 Want to know more about how stress barriers and changes in mode I fracture toughness affect HFs? 😎 Read it open access here https://lnkd.in/dsbUgKJT 📑 In our study, we distinguish between three possible interactions for fractures remaining purely planar and considering only mode I fracture growth: 1️⃣ immediate breakthrough 2️⃣ transient containment 3️⃣ indefinite containment The three correspond to the fracture not feeling the interface (1️⃣ immediate breakthrough), the fracture spreading along the interface before pushing through (2️⃣ transient containment), and the fracture of finite volume being blocked forever (3️⃣ indefinite containment). ❇ We develop energy-based and scaling arguments to predict the necessary strength of the changes in various configurations of the initial fracture and for arbitrary distances between the injection point and the interface. ✔ Our results show good agreement in many aspects and show, that stress barriers are much more efficient in containing fractures at depth than changes in mode I fracture toughness. 🙏 A big thank you to my co-authors Carlo Peruzzo, Dmitry Garagash, and Brice Lecampion. Understanding and quantifying non-isothermal heat transport is an important step in the development of predictive modeling for high-temperature subsurface thermal storage installations. Using a time series multi-parameter dataset generated from well controlled laboratory-scale experiments ensures the validation procedure of such model. In our recent published paper https://lnkd.in/emNjiH6V, we presented a systematic investigation of thermal convection along a high-temperature borehole heat exchanger (BHE) at temperature range from 30 to 90°C in a permeable water-saturated sand. This research has greatly enhanced our understanding of the process. We computed five metrics for the quantification the magnitude and onset of convection in porous media and applied a combined experimental and numerical analysis to estimate the contribution of convection at 30, 50, 70 and 90°C operating temperature. The Benefits of a Mini Venturi in Cryogenics In academic research, accurate data and repeatable results are paramount for meaningful and valid conclusions. Within the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, ongoing research in the Cryogenic Lab includes a study into the transient heat transfer consequent to a sudden rupture of the insulating vacuum jacket around a cryogenic system. This work is part of a larger effort in the cryogenic industry to characterize the mass transport and heat transport that transpire as ambient gas floods into a broken vacuum and condenses/freezes onto cryogenically cooled surfaces. The magnitude and rate of heat transferred could lead to significant damage to cryogenic systems or even large industrial accidents.

Earlier this month the SCL Seminar series continued with a presentation by Pei-Yun Tsai, a PhD candidate in my group, on "Transfer properties of tubular pipe heat exchangers: Exploring parameter dependencies with a stochastic flow model" Tubular #pipe #heat #exchangers form a canonical problem that is relevant for a number of applications ranging from geothermal and thermal engineering, to photo and surface chemistry (like in through-flow reactors), among others. Pei-Yun demonstrated how a rigorous analytical approach can benefit from map-based #stochastic #flow #modeling. The latter is used to estimate closure relations based on fully-resolved #turbulent #boundary #layers over spanwise-curved walls for various radius ratios, Reynolds, and Prandtl numbers.
