💥 Good news from Cyprus💥 ✔Last week The Rule 39 Pro Bono Initiative (Pro Iura) and Cypriot NGO KISA submitted an interim measure request to prompt Cyprus to abide by its obligations under Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). The request aimed at ensuring decent accommodation and humane conditions for a group of asylum seekers stranded in the buffer zone, as well as to protect them against refoulement. ✔Following an exchange between the ECtHR, the Cypriot government and the applicants (represented by nicoletta charalambidou) all the #asylumseekers previously stranded have been transferred from the buffer zone into accomodation facilities in government-controlled territory, and their asylum application have been officially registered. ✔We welcome this positive development, which marks a significant moment in Cyprus's handling of asylum procedures and human rights commitments, although concerns persist regarding the lack of procedural safeguards in the handling of the applicants' asylum claims. Special recognition is due to the volunteers of Rule 39 Pro Bono Initiative and the leadership of Muriel Vicquéry, whose tireless efforts have played a pivotal role in upholding the basic human rights of vulnerable individuals. We remain committed to monitoring the situation to ensure sustained protection and dignity for all affected. #AsylumRights #HumanRights #Cyprus #EuropeanLaw #ECHR

WHAT IS TAIWAN’S PUBLIC OPINION ON POTENTIAL ASYLUM MECHANISM AND REFUGEES? 🇹🇼 ❌ #Taiwan – one of the most progressive countries in Asia – has no #asylum law. Due to its political status and its complicated relationship with China, there are serious concerns surrounding this topic. Compounding this issue is the limited discussion on this topic within Taiwanese society. To address this gap, the chapter in the book about REFUGEES AND ASYLUM SEEKERS IN EAST ASIA 📚 presents the findings of the first-ever comprehensive, nationally representative survey that explores Taiwanese views on the #refugee issue. A few words for beneficiaries of temporary protection 🇺🇦 Many #temporaryprotection beneficiaries from Ukraine are interested in: what is #internationalprotection? #Refugee status is defined in article 1, paragraph 2, of the 1951 UN Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. For the purposes of the Convention, the term applies to any person who has a well-founded fear of persecution❗ on account of 1) race, 2) religion, 3) nationality, 4) membership of a particular group or political opinion, 5) is outside the country of his or her nationality, 6) does not wish to avail himself or herself of the protection of that country and is 7) unable or unwilling to return to it. The Convention was signed in Geneva on 28 July 1951, hence its name - the Geneva Convention of 1951. It is important to realise that the basis of fundamental #law is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 14), which states that everyone has the right to seek and enjoy asylum from persecution in other countries. Therefore, everyone 🇺🇦 must decide for themselves: does their personal situation meet the requirements of the Convention? And everyone must answer the question: what exactly is the fear of persecution ☄ in the home country? 🔍 ASSEDEL Report: Greece’s Human Rights Violations at Its Borders In its latest submission for the Third Periodic Review of Greece before the United Nations Human Rights Committee, ASSEDEL highlights Greece’s continued breaches of international human rights standards at its borders. The report focuses on pushbacks of migrants and asylum seekers, a practice that violates key obligations under treaties such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the 1951 Refugee Convention, and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). Despite repeated recommendations from international bodies, Greece continues collective expulsions, arbitrary detention, and inhumane treatment of asylum seekers, particularly at the Evros land border and in the Aegean Sea. Numerous NGOs, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have documented these violations, alongside concerns raised by the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture. 🕊️Special thanks to the Greek Council for Refugees and Omer Shatz for their invaluable support and contributions to this important cause. The report calls for stronger international oversight and enforcement to ensure that Greece adheres to its binding commitments under international law. Our website 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eac6Xvse 🌍 Human rights must be upheld at all borders. #HumanRights #Greece #AsylumSeekers #Migration #InternationalLaw #Refugees #UN #Pushbacks #Accountability #GreekCouncilForRefugees #OmerShatz
