This article got my attention. SOLID or municipal waste management has always been a prickly issue for local government institutions. Solid waste is managed largely ineffectively even these days. As the problem is graver in cities, especially the capital city, because of its increased population, unplanned and rapid urbanisation and fast economic growth, waste management problem has also been an issue that none of the city authorities of Dhaka has properly handled Takeaway: Go and watch the first video on the storyofstuff.org's website. It will provide food for thought. Here is the link: https://lnkd.in/dtDHmXw Denise van Huyssteen - Share this with your team. https://lnkd.in/dtDHmXw https://lnkd.in/dChk2FX2

Scrap Metals, Waste Management, and Sustainability: Unlocking Opportunities for Nigeria and Africa The scrap metals recycling industry is a critical sector in promoting sustainable waste management practices, reducing environmental pollution, and conserving natural resources. As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, waste management, and sustainability, Nigeria and Africa must adopt best recycling practices to unlock opportunities for economic growth, job creation, and environmental protection. Current State of Scrap Metals Recycling in Nigeria and Africa Nigeria and Africa are facing significant challenges in managing scrap metals and other waste materials. According to the World Bank, Nigeria generates approximately 32 million tons of solid waste annually, with only 20-30% being collected and disposed of properly (Source: World Bank). Similarly, Africa generates over 150 million tons of solid waste annually, with the majority being disposed of in landfills or through open burning (Source: African Development Bank). Suitable Methods for Improving Recycling Practices To improve scrap metals recycling practices in Nigeria and Africa, we recommend the following methods: 1. Implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): EPR policies require manufacturers to take responsibility for the waste generated by their products. 2. Developing Closed-Loop Recycling Systems: Closed-loop recycling systems involve designing products and systems that are restorative and regenerative by design. 3. Investing in Waste-to-Wealth Technologies: Waste-to-wealth technologies involve converting waste materials into valuable products such as energy, fuels, and chemicals. Positioning Metal Circle for Opportunities At Metal Circle, we're committed to promoting sustainable waste management practices in Nigeria and Africa. Our mission is to create a circular economy that reduces waste, conserves resources, and promotes sustainable development. Benefits of Adopting Sustainable Waste Management Practices Adopting sustainable waste management practices can bring numerous benefits to Nigeria and Africa, including: 1. Job Creation and Economic Growth: The waste management sector has the potential to create millions of jobs and stimulate economic growth. 1. Environmental Protection: Sustainable waste management practices can help reduce environmental pollution, conserve natural resources, and mitigate climate change. 2. Improved Public Health: Proper waste management practices can help prevent the spread of diseases, reduce mortality rates, and improve public health outcomes. Join us in our mission to create a more sustainable future for all! #ScrapMetalsRecycling #WasteManagement #Sustainability #Nigeria #Africa #CircularEconomy #ScrapMetals #Metals #WasteToWealth #MetalCircleHQ

In general, there are plants in Africa for the recycling of aluminum scrap, but none with this combination of high capacity (150,000 tons of waste per year) and GME's level of technology and automation, and therefore final yield recovery. It is estimated that our plant can achieve separated aluminum with a yield of over 97% and is fully automated, drastically reducing the disposal of abandoned waste and eliminating the typical exploitation of these territories.
GME Recycling has built the first automated aluminum recycling plant in Nigeria

Today, as I step onto the stage of the Waste Expo, I'm entering the epicenter of North America's waste management arena, a bustling hub where the $85 billion solid waste, recycling, and organics industry converges. Here in Las Vegas, Nevada, from May 6-9, 2024, decision makers from governments, industries, and the private sector unite to navigate the complexities of waste management, circular economy, and recycling. In the spotlight of this esteemed gathering, I'll be shining a beacon on the transformative endeavors of KALTANI in Nigeria's recycling landscape. But beyond that, I'll cast a wider beam, illuminating the vast expanse of Africa's $40 billion waste management industry. Within this narrative, I'll delve deep into the dynamics of Africa's explosive urbanization, the burgeoning middle class, and the intricate dance of shifting consumption patterns amidst a global tide of waste trade. Yet, my discourse doesn't end there. I'll traverse the corridors of implication, exploring the ramifications for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), major waste management conglomerates, and the discerning eyes of investors. Within their realm lies the promise of exponential market share growth, intricately intertwined with the fate of Africa's waste management and recycling sector—a sector brimming with potential, promising to breathe life into over a million livelihoods. This isn't just a presentation, and panel discussion; it's a testament to a cause that resonates deeply within me. It's about more than just numbers and statistics; it's about the human story, the untold tales of opportunity, and the transformative power of waste turned into wealth. Today, as I stand before this esteemed audience, I carry the hopes of a continent, the aspirations of countless individuals, and the unwavering belief that from waste springs forth a new dawn of prosperity. #Wastemanagement #recycling #wasteexpo #sustainability #circulareconomy #KALTANI

Nigeria has made remarkable strides in waste management, particularly in metal and PET bottle recycling, turning waste into valuable resources. With metal scrap prices soaring and PET bottle values rising significantly, the economic benefits are clear. However, challenges remain in recovering other materials like polythene, colored packaging, and organic waste. At UpwardEco Ltd, we're committed to advancing waste recovery by emphasizing source segregation and creating a thriving economy within the waste stream. We believe that with collective effort, we can reduce landfill waste and give valuable materials a second life. 👉 Read the full blog post to learn more about our progress, challenges, and the call to action for all stakeholders to join us in building a sustainable future. https://lnkd.in/dFaniwkY

AfriForum's audit shows only 2 of 7 Tshwane landfills meet compliance, with Mooiplaats and Bon Accord, managed by IWMSA member The Waste Group - South Africa, leading the way. Suggested solutions include privatisation, enhanced oversight, developing new sites, alternative waste treatment, benchmarking best practices, and addressing informal recycling. https://lnkd.in/deH-WrNi?

Waste dumped in landfills generates #greenhousegases, pollutes surroundings, and takes up space. #Landfills can even be fatal - in 2017, the Koshe landfill led to a landslide that killed at least 113 people in Addis Ababa. This new IGC blog examines how #waste management agencies can better process waste and how households can be incentivised to segregate waste 🚯 https://lnkd.in/eUzKpRw3
