We can’t forget about our mission. Family is at the core of everything we do ❤️ Often, it’s hard to remember “why” you’re doing something in the day-to-day… It’s not until you take a step back to look at the bigger picture that you can truly understand your impact. At BG, we understand the profound impact that active engagement in education has on growth and development, shaping true citizens of the world. As an educational nonprofit, we’re committed to applying nature-based solutions to BiG projects in ecological restoration, environmental technology, and social change. From organizing enriching activities to fostering mentorship - we support initiatives that address educational disparities and advocate for equal access to education, and make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. With passion and dedication, we empower the next generation to integrate their education with a deep respect for our shared ecology and an entrepreneurial mindset. 𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹. 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂?

This Sunday sees another gathering for Queanbeyan’s Willing&Able around the question of ‘What does it take to be in right relationship with each other and the living world as co-evolutionary, co-creating communities?’ There are no experts in the field of regenerative development, only committed life-long learners around the unfolding question of how we come together as Human Beings and leave together as co-creating Human Becomings There will be no answers, solutions, or knowings that come from this next session, though if there is any measurement of success, it will be the amount of comfort we start to feel together to move into a co-creative process and exploration of this very unique and beautiful region So the questions between now and then to consider… Who do you know that we all should know? Who should be at the table when co-designing as a whole living system? Who do we each need to show up as if we are going to step into a community gathering with integrity, respect, and reciprocity? How can we hold both the needs of the many with the needs of our few? Why are you willing to enter this gathering of people, and what would you like to contribute to place? As we work together through time with this project, we will be developing an ecosystem of value reciprocity that hopefully nourishes everyone in community and will be co-designed through community, so there is no model or design we are looking to stamp on the region. I do like AppleSeed’s 8 Capital Model as a reference for thinking about the different forms of value, lived experience, and contribution that is helpful for communities to understand each other, and each other’s own unique genius better I look forward to meeting you this Sunday at Sun Villages' 76-acre property at the end of Philips Ave behind Spotlight. The gathering is from 11am to 2pm, with the main session for the first hour around the question, ‘What does it take to be in right relationship with each other and the living world as co-evolutionary, co-creating communities?’ #queanbeyan #communitydevelopment #regionaldevelopment #regenerativedevelopment #impact #placebasedcapital #community #affordablehousing #communitylandtrusts

The Open Air Education mission revolves around empowering young learners to connect with nature, understand their role in nurturing our planet, and take meaningful action for sustainability. Rewilding is a critical piece of that puzzle; it’s not just about restoring ecosystems but also about inspiring communities to dream bigger for our shared future. That's why I'm looking forward to this event, which is so important to me and our work: - Learning from Innovators: I’m eager to hear from thought leaders about rewilding land, sea, and species. Their insights will help us deepen the impact of our curriculum. - Building Connections: The North East Rewilding Network exemplifies the power of collaboration. By connecting with other rewilders and conservationists, I aim to foster new partnerships that could enrich both our school and the broader community. Rewilding is about hope, resilience, and the potential for nature (and people) to thrive. As an educator, it’s my duty to bring that vision to life in the minds of the next generation. If you’re passionate about rewilding or curious to learn more, come and say hi at this inspiring celebration. Let’s work together to reimagine our relationship with nature, one step at a time. #Rewilding #SustainabilityEducation #OutdoorLearning #NorthEastRewildingNetwork #ESD

*** Nature teams with Diversity *** Diversity gives strength and resilience to systems *** It is not just pivotal to see it at work in natural systems and how it applies to education as we work towards a more sustainable future for our children - also in teams within organizations. #startnow to #changemindset and #rethink to #createimpact -> #learningfromnature #sustainabilityeducation #TheHarmonyProject #principlesofharmony
Recently, we have been exploring Nature's principles of Harmony, which underpin The Harmony Project's curriculum and our vision for the future of education. Today, let's look at the principle of Diversity, how we see it at work in natural systems and how we can apply it to education as we work towards a more sustainable future for our children Nature teems with diversity! If we stop to observe a meadow, we see that it can sustain an incredible range of species. It is this diversity that gives strength and resilience to natural systems. When the principle of Diversity is applied to our own lives, it makes our communities, our learning and our experiences richer and stronger, too. To understand how to live sustainably, and to help our children develop this understanding, we need to value and promote diversity in all we do #naturebasedlearning #learningfromnature #sustainabilityeducation #TheHarmonyProject #principlesofharmony

On the 7th of February, we began our second Introductory Fellowship to #EffectiveAltruism, with an inspiring group of young individuals from various studies. During week 3, we were delighted to have Soemano Zeijlmans give a workshop and stimulate interesting discussions! During this meeting, we discussed #RadicalEmpathy, or Moral Expansion, Impartiality, and Moral Positions in a wider sense. Who shall we care about? Which beings deserve moral consideration? According to our answers to these questions, what are the implications on our daily lives?
It was so exciting to give a workshop about moral circle expansion and #EffectiveAltruism at Positive Impact Society Erasmus! It's so exciting to see people thinking actively about the most good that they can do in their career, such as by advancing #alternativeproteins to halt climate change and reduce animal suffering. If you're a student in the Netherlands and you're interested in planning an impactful career, consider joining one of the effective altruism student groups in 14 university towns in the Netherlands! I had the privilege of attending a captivating Lunch & Learn event today, organized by the GVA KPMG Sustainability Committee and in partnership with Sea Smart. On this Earth Day, our focus was on 'Species at Risk,' with a special emphasis on the orcas inhabiting the Salish Sea. Elaine Leung, PhD shed light on the myriad threats facing these magnificent creatures, ranging from the disruptive sonic noise emitted by shipping activities to the far-reaching impacts of land-based endeavors like construction and mining. These disturbances profoundly affect orca navigation, communication, and ultimately, their survival. Orcas are not only apex predators essential to the health of the Salish Sea ecosystem but also creatures of complex social structures with unique communities, languages, and diets. This complexity underlines the intricate balance and interconnectivity of their ecosystems—our well-being included. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and the ECHO Program are making strides in reducing the impact of maritime activities on these at-risk whales by developing quieter vessel technologies. Sea Smart played a key role in today's event. This charity offers workshops, online courses, and shoreline cleanups, providing solutions-based, action-oriented education on marine conservation. They inspire individuals and organizations to protect our oceans through actionable steps, such as reducing consumption of Chinook salmon, which is vital to local orca diets, and farmed Atlantic salmon. As stewards of Earth, we must ensure the awe-inspiring beauty and the crucial services of healthy ecosystems for future generations. Our choices today shape the health and vitality of our planet tomorrow. #EarthDay #SpeciesAtRisk #SeaSmart #Sustainability #MarineConservation

How can we instill a sense of environmental stewardship in our children for a better future for them, just as our ancestors did? This question kept arising in my mind as I have been reading Ikechukwu Anthony Kanu, OSA, PhD work on African Indigenous Ecological Knowledge Systems illuminating the profound connection between our cultural heritage and the environment. As Dr. Kanu explains, “The preservation of sacred animals and the taboos surrounding them were ecological guardians, playing major roles in the conservation of biodiversity.” In our current way of life, I can't help but think of children having a reverence for nature and a sense of responsibility for nature through their schools. Their educational curriculum integrating stories of nature that weave traditional tales and narratives that emphasize the importance of protecting nature and its creatures. Children having outdoor learning sessions and experiences where they can connect with nature helping them understand the beauty and fragility of the world around them Use of art, music, and drama to explore themes of nature and animal protection forging a personal connection with environmental issues that can inspire lifelong stewardship. Engaging local communities in conservation efforts and storytelling sessions. When children witness their parents and elders valuing nature, they are more likely to adopt those values as their own. By embracing these educational changes, we can nurture a generation that understands the sacred relationship between humans and the natural world. Let’s delve into the wisdom of our ancestors and embrace the teachings of great minds like Dr. Kanu as we strive for a greener future! His work offers invaluable insights into how we can apply indigenous knowledge today to protect our environment. What are your thoughts on integrating indigenous knowledge into modern education? Name a role model that you look up to. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved Jane Goodall. Back then, I found the notion of a female scientist observing chimpanzees in Gombe inspiring. And she is most certainly an excellent, groundbreaking scientist – observant, insightful, and analytical. It’s because of Gooddall that I was initially attracted to science. But Goodall is so much more than just a scientist. She’s compassionate, and not just towards animals. The Jane Goodall Institute sponsors community-based conservation and development programs that have simultaneously protected habitats AND lifted local villages out of poverty. My own compassion for my clients and audience drive me to coach, write, and teach. She’s a trailblazer, paving the way for women in science, and paving the way for environmental activism. I don’t know if I can claim being a trailblazer but I’m definitely an experimentalist willing to try new things even if it’s never been done before. She’s an educator who created the incredibly impactful Roots and Shoots program in schools across the world, empowering young people to make a different in their local communities. Education is one of my core values. She spreads a message of hope and positivity. Goodall says, Jane says, “Hope is what enables us to keep going in the face of adversity. It is what we desire to happen, but we must be prepared to work hard to make it so.” Hope isn’t optimism. It’s not wishful thinking or looking on the bright side. It’s full understanding of the dark place we are in right now, but holding to the belief that if we take action there will be a brighter future ahead. When times are dark for me, it’s that quote that keeps me going. She moves through life with grace. Who do you admire and why?
