Really thrilled to see that the Akaroa jetty design utilised screw pile technology and not vibro-hammer methodology that is known to cause excessive underwater noise pollution. When the cruise ship berth at Lyttelton was being developed, I opposed their use of hammered piles for the new design, based on evidence that its use had clear negative effects on the resident dolphins. The NZ Whale and Dolphin Trust has researched the effects of underwater piling on Hector’s dolphins - in particular, during the development of cashin Quay 2 at Lyttelton port. At a minimum, the piling caused a number of behavioural changes, impacting foraging and the distribution of smaller groups of dolphins within the greater harbour. The 87.8-metre (288-foot) long 'Høgaberg' replaces an earlier vessel of the same name. The vessel design, specifications, and arrangements are the result of an extensive and close cooperation between the owner and the yard where all solutions are optimised and tailor made to suit the owner’s and crew’s specific requirements. The design and construction focused mainly on optimising working, safety and comfort for the crew, streamlining of catch handling and storage facilities, and minimising fuel consumption. Set up a construction site at a location without a power supply with sustainability in mind? Laurent Noteltiers, Project Manager at SPIE Nederland, says: "The excellent solution Boels came up with ensures that we now have power. Boels also provided valuable input on the positioning of the units on site, where space is limited." Noteltiers continues: "There was supposed to be a permanent power supply, but it hasn’t been installed yet. Boels responded effectively and adjusted the design accordingly." 🌊𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐩 𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫! On Antwerp's Left Bank, the final section of the old dike, which separates the river Scheldt from the Scheldetunnel, is being excavated. Once this section is removed, the first tunnel element will be fully underwater! This marks another major step in the Oosterweel project, which will complete the Antwerp ring road. To protect the first tunnel section on the Left Bank from the strong currents of the Scheldt, the site was carefully flooded last month. 400 meters of the old dike are excavated to make way for the arrival of the first tunnel element later this year from the construction yard in Zeebrugge. This element will be linked to the existing section on the Left Bank by summer 2025. Additionally, a new, higher dike has been constructed 300 meters inland, offering improved flood protection while also creating 24 hectares of tidal nature - roughly the size of 34 soccer fields.
